Founder And Chief Scientific OfficerOpenclinical C.I.C. 2003 - PresentOxford And London, UkProviding incubator and trialling services for machine executable models of clinical decision making and workflow management using the OpenClinical AI platform. The project is summarised in a short article in BMJ HCI (link above). OpenClinical CIC has been "spun in" to Oxford University Innovation's social enterprise portfolio because its knowledge dissemination and educational goals are closely aligned with those of the University -
ProfessorLincoln College, University Of Oxford Oct 2015 - PresentRoyal Leamington Spa, England, United Kingdom -
Founder And Chief Scientific Officer,Deontics Ltd. Jan 2008 - Dec 2020Oxford University; Ucl Academic OncologySpinout company from Oxford University in collaboration with UCL Business and Cancer Research UK, whose goal is to provide advanced decision support technology and services for multidisciplinary patient care. Initially focused on cancer and multidisciplinary care, but increasingly developing applications of Deontics' uniquely versatile CREDO technology in cardiology, endocrinology and other clinical specialties, for healthcare professionals and patients. -
Honorary ProfessorUniversity Of Warwick 2015 - 2017Department Of StatisticsCollaborations at Warwick University on techniques for decision-making in AI and the design of autonomous cognitive systems. -
Professor Of Engineering Science (Cognitive Systems Engineering)University Of Oxford 2007 - Sep 2015UkTeaching and research in cognitive science and computer science, and their use in supporting quality and safety of medical care. Director of the COSSAC interdisciplinary collaboration on cognitive science and systems engineering (2007-2012), and OpenClinical.net knowledge sharing project (2003- present). Led the creation of Deontics Ltd, based on the Tallis and Alium knowledge engineering platforms developed at Oxford University, Edinburgh University and University College London (2008). -
Director, Clinical Informatics IncubatorUcl And Royal Free Hospital 2008 - 2015Translating research in cognitive systems and medical informatics into practical clinical technologies and applications in oncology, endocrinology, and primary care. Headline achievements were the company spinout (Deontics Ltd) that has world-leading decision technology and the OpenClinical knowledge sharing and crowd sourcing platform (www.openclinical.net). -
Principal ScientistCancer Research Uk 1981 - 2006Lif Laboratories, Lincoln'S Inn Fields, LondonEstablished an interdisciplinary programme of work on the theory and application of cognitive science and systems for improving quality and safety of patient care. The programme made contributions in computer science and cognitive science, software engineering and knowledge engineering, and applications in oncology and other medical specialties. The CRUK group originated a novel and remarkably versatile theory of decision-making based on non-classical logics (Symbolic Decision Theory). Among other innovations SDT introduces a human-like model of reasoning (argumentation) to address limitations and shortcomings of classical quantitative algorithms for decision-making and uncertainty management. SDT has proved itself to have great range and capabilities in medical and other domains, and is an effective foundation for the design and development of artificial cognitive systems (see reviews at https://www.researchgate.net/profile/John_Fox5 and Safe and Sound: Artificial Intelligence in Hazardous Applictions, AAAI and MIT Press, 2000). A key result of the work was the PROforma decision and planning language which provides an expressive formalism for modelling professional expertise and deploying "human friendly" decision services and other cognitive agents. The lab was active in commercialisation of these technologies; its technologies were licenced to Expertech Ltd., in the 1980s (acquired by Inference Corp) and we led the foundation of InferMed Ltd in 1999 and Deontics Ltd. in 2015, to take the results of our research into practical clinical use. InferMed was acquired by the medical and scientific publisher Elsevier. in 2015. -
Co-FounderInfermed Ltd. (Acquired By Elsevier, 2015) 1996 - 1999Bedford Square, LondonDeveloper and supplier of versatile clinical decision support platform (Arezzo) and applications (e.g. NHS Choices and NHS24, UK; BPAC primary care guidelines, NZ).Arezzo: technology originally developed at Cancer Research UK (Advanced Computation Lab.)InferMed received the Queen's award for innovation and enterprise in 2012.

Postdoctoral ResearcherMedical Research Council Aug 1975 - Aug 1981Sheffield, United KingdomSet up and ran First AId project which probably put the first real time decision making AI on a doctor's desk in the NHS (gastroenterology outpatient clinic, 1978). Successful trial but a "black box" so we moved to a human centred "cognitive" approach). Thanks to colleagues David Barber and Chandu Bardhan.for huge contributions
