About John Smithies

With 25 years management experience in the creative industries including leading the creation of ACMI, Australia’s premier and first of its kind, cinema-culture venue. Leading a major cultural institution, I had growing awareness that the fundamental issue faced by the cultural sector is just how to demonstrate its impact in a way that meets the needs of its funders while remaining true to its purpose. My career for the last 10 years has focused on addressing this issue and developing a comprehensive and user friendly method for cultural sector actors to demonstrate the very real impacts they have. This has resulted in Takso, a unique tech platform providing a comprehensive end to end solution to the recording, evaluation of cultural activities that takes reporting beyond what happened to what was achieved. Takso is the answer to the search for meaning and measurement of our cultural activities and being able to clearly report the cultural impact to our boards, funders and other stakeholders. This exciting development is networking arts and cultural organisations through common data collection. Takso is growing as a vital piece of infrastructure (over 1,500 activities recorded) that connects the outcomes of cultural activities to greater investment in culture while also recognising its impact on society, the economy and environment.
