My specific project focused on developing a composite fast neutron detector using scintillation material to detect radioactive material at security checkpoints. MCNP simulation software provided by Los Alamos National Laboratory allowed me to perform efficiency tests on the proposed design. A large majority of my work focused on the implementation of wavelength shifting plastic to eliminate photon reabsorption. During this fellowship, I was fortunate enough to work with 9 other undergraduate students from universities across the country with disciplines varying from engineering, physics, mathematics, and radiological science. At the end of the program, research results for our projects were presented to Toshiba-Westinghouse executives and fellow interns. Show less
