About John Oberlin

I have a multidisciplinary background emphasizing computer vision, robotics, and medical imaging employing unique combinations of hardware and software. I am proficient in machine learning, data science, optimization and algorithms, with practical experience building basic optical systems and conducting animal lab oriented medical device research. My ideal position would be leading a motivated team in goal-driven research with concrete deliverables. Communication, teamwork, accountability and timely results are central to my work strategy. For my PhD at Brown I designed and deployed a synthetic aperture vision system that enabled a robotic arm to autonomously manipulate household objects, even those that were transparent and metallic (such as glassware and silverware). While there I also lead a team to design and build an autonomous quad-copter which used a camera, a range finder, and gyros to map and autonomously navigate its surroundings with position and altitude control. While at Activ I extended my skills to multi-modal medical imaging utilizing laser speckle contrast imaging, multi-spectral image deconvolution and fluorescence while working with surgeons to understand and target unmet clinical needs. While there I designed and implemented solutions to intraoperatively determine tissue oxygenation, measure blood flow in tissue, identify critical structures, and detect surgical injuries. I enjoy finding efficient solutions with low algorithmic complexity that can be scaled effectively on parallel platforms (such as GPUs and clusters) and maintained responsibly. My experience at Havok taught me the skills and awareness necessary to deploy high performance solutions in a customer-centric environment.

I led the research team in the invention and development of new surgical visualization techniques and algorithms for the assessment of tissue perfusion and patency and the identification of critical structures. Technology I invented allowed surgeons to identify arteries, veins, lymph nodes, ureters and urine leaks during surgery, which reduces the rate of unintended and undetected injuries during surgery.
