Recently completed another contract CEO role, in a really interesting organisation.Technically a Not For Profit with a regular workforce headcount of over 300 wonderful humans, this organisation runs a sizeable 'commercial transport business' to generate a 'surplus for purpose' to reinvest into making a significant social impact. An initial short term appointment to define organisational change needs, extended to 10 months and the opportunity not only to instigate the change process but also to open several business growth initiatives.A challenging and enjoyable opportunity to really drill in and develop a thorough understanding of mission, vision, strategy, culture and structure...and to begin to apply my standard approach to leadership and change management, in circumstances where change was clearly necessary: 1. Align the team around the organisation's purpose, creating the culture you need. Respect draws out the discretionary effort and thinking necessary for 'great' results.2. Agree clear behavioural standards and expectations on results, and set stretch ( 'great' ) business goals.3. Hold each team member accountable for personal outputs, and outcomes. Make it ok to call out others for a breaches of agreed bevaviours.4. Recruit, retain and develop the right 'players'. Belief without proof - if skills are less than you'd like, do they have the potential and attitude to succeed given the right training and coaching? 5. Measure and share results, especially successes. If in doubt, share more rather than less6. Ask the uncomfortable questions and have the crucial conversations. 7. Deliver consequence - both positive and negative. Keep your promises.7. Focus internally on your goals rather than worry too much about the competition. Make it fun. 8. Learn from mistakes - and be especially vigilant for the passive resistors. Early exit for people who have their shoulder to the wheel, but who are leaning instead of pushing. The rewards of coaching are enormous, both personally and in business sense. Discretionary energy and effort become part of the culture - the way 'we do things around here'. Showing initiative, and trying new ways without fear of failure or persecution helps people grow - beyond expectations at times. 'How can we improve our customer experience?' becomes second nature thinking. "Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great"...John D. Rockefeller

Business ManagerAustralasian Safety Services Pty Ltd Mar 2014 - Oct 2015Brisbane, AustraliaJohn was engaged to conduct a strategic review of the business operations at Aussafety - structure, culture, business processes, team composition, finances etc with the objective of planning the next step up for this long established SME and leader in the safety and occupational health area nationally. The business' particular focus is on occupational hygiene and industrial audiometry. Aussafety offers custom moulded hearing protection for workers in noisy environments that offers attenuation that can be validated at the tympanic membrane - a feature offered by no other solution globally. John conducted an in depth diagnostic review of Aussafety's operations, managing resultant change initiatives right across the business and coaching the business owners to develop a fresh Purpose and Value set to underpin greater engagement amongst professional and other staff. John also established a contact centre operation and optimised the business CRM system with reluctant sales increases from many inactive clients, getting involved first hand in coaching sales staff and training them in new processes to strengthen and optimise the sales pipeline.

Managing DirectorConnect Hearing (Part Of The Zurich Listed Sonova Ag Group) Sep 2007 - Feb 2014Sydney, AustraliaThis retail /allied health business had begun primarily as a defensive /vertical acquisition strategy to protect a supply channel by Swiss manufacturer parent, Sonova AG. John was recruited in 2007 after a handful of acquisitions of private audiology practices had been completed. These businesses were operating as a loose coalition with little united direction and poor results. Johns remit was to develop a new brand in the space in Australia, to bring together a team of aligned professionals, and to grow critical mass and bottom line as stand alone business - in addition to securing supply of Phonak and Unitron Hearing Aids for Sonova.By the time John was finished six and a half years later the Connect Hearing brand had been born and the business had become a true leader in the hearing care / hearing aid retail space in Australia operating from 115 POS. John achieved this through inspiring and creating a really positive performance culture among the team of 200 clinicians and support staff. John used his coaching skills and those of a hand picked and world class leadership team to engage a team of fabulous people, driven to improve the lives of people suffering the insidious affliction of a hearing loss. Leading by personal example and exhibiting his characteristic positive energy, John personally led the small team who developed the Connect Hearing brand, into which 15 further acquisitions were also integrated. The Connect Hearing brand was subsequently adopted into USA, Canada, and several other countriesDuring this time, John was also a founding director of a new industry association, the Hearing Care Industry Association which actively lobbied Govt to enhance hearing care, and was also part of the industry's first combined attempt to raise funds and profile with the public - the Silent Leadership Challenge - where John emulated the stressful conditions suffered by hearing impaired people by wearing ear muffs into everyday situations. -

General Manager, New ZealandOpsm Dec 2001 - Nov 2003Auckland, New ZealandJohn had overall country management responsibility and leadership of a team of 160 in 35 retail locations. In just 2 years, John turned this business around, recording a 275% EBIT growth by strengthening and revitalising the retail offer. He totally overhauled the team structure and composition, introducing a coaching approach to OPSMs business in New Zealand. John created a key preferred supplier relationship with NZ's leading health fund.
