At East Carolina, John was Director of the Interdisciplinary Program in Classical Studies since 2008. In this capacity, he oversaw the curriculum, advised all majors and minors and facilitated all program-related events. During these years, he began the Classics Performance Series, which presented live performances of classical works.John was also a faculty leader in campus finances, having served on the University Budget Committee for five years, including one year as chair, and on the Campus Tuition and Fees Committee and the University Committee on Fiscal Sustainability. His leadership successes led to his election as Vice Chair of the university faculty.

Duties included: overseeing accounts payable processes (maintenance of records, data entry, cutting checks, reconciliations), handling past-due accounts (including selecting accounts for collection agencies and accounts for write-off), preparing journal entries, producing monthly statement of cash flows and reconciliations, assisting in composition of financial statements, assisting in preparations for annual audits
