Designed new instruments for measuring parameters of semiconductor wafers using Zemax and Solidworks design tools to optimize optical mechanical designs for new instruments. Designed auto-focus mechanism for existing tools which measure parameters of silicon wafers. Working closely with CTO to developed several new instruments for measuring parameters of new 3D wafers. These instruments require special adjustments mechanism to fit in small areas.Costs are of primary concern so high priority was given to low costs methods for assembly and design. My in depth knowledge of optical components and mechanical allow me to review existing designs and find opportunities to reduce cost of components. On one project I was able to replace components and save over 3k of costs on an previously designed instrument.

Designed very small and innovative mounts for mirrors, lenses and other components. These mounts had a footprint about the size of a sugar cube. They were precisely located, adjustable in two axes, lockable, and were able to withstand 10g of force. Designed ultra- small beam expanders, wave plate holders and mounting fixtures for other electro-optical devices. Designed tooling for assembling these mounts. Integrated these mounts and components into the ultra-compact sensor head, also developed methods for aligning the sensor head.

Used FEA analyses when necessary to prove design functionality. • Designed, fabricated, built and installed three observatory grade instruments in three years. • All mechanical mounts were designed using kinematic principles and attention was paid to minimize thermal effects. • Instruments had to be completely isolated from outside environmental conditions and very stable because data was taken and then compared to data taken years earlier.
