About John Groot
I have over 10 years’ experience in the optical mechanical design field. I have designed mechanisms for positioning and aligning optics (focus, rotation, translation, tip and tilt) using kinematic principles, including the design of mechanical tooling and fixtures that are used in the assembly these components. I have in-depth knowledge of optical principles which allow me to develop alignment and assembly processes for optical instruments and assemblies. I have good communication skills having been project leader and manager in several previous position working independently or with groups.Along with my skills in optical mechanical design, I am a hands on engineer with machine shop and electrical knowledge enabling me to be versatile in most aspects of instrument design. My hours are flexible when I know the job has to meet schedule I will get it done. I am looking forward to meeting with you and discussing this position.John Groot

Opto-Mechanical Engineer
Opto-Mechanical Engineer
Designed new instruments for measuring parameters of semiconductor wafers using Zemax and Solidworks design tools to optimize optical mechanical designs for new instruments. Designed auto-focus mechanism for existing tools which measure parameters of silicon wafers. Working closely with CTO to developed several new instruments for measuring parameters of new 3D wafers. These instruments require special adjustments mechanism to fit in small areas.Costs are of primary concern so high priority was given to low costs methods for assembly and design. My in depth knowledge of optical components and mechanical allow me to review existing designs and find opportunities to reduce cost of components. On one project I was able to replace components and save over 3k of costs on an previously designed instrument.
Optical Mechanical Engineer
• Defined, developed, and prototyped optical-mechanical systems for flow cytometry. • Designed many stages (using sub-millimeter optics) and mechanisms that used kinematic principles, • Also used cams, precision screws, and flexures to achieve stability.
Optical Mechanical Engineer
• Designed instruments and drawings for a confidential laser project. • Designed instrument layouts and system architecture. • Supplied cost estimates, materials sourcing, supplier qualification, and vendor management.
Optical Mechanical Engineer
Optical Mechanical Engineer
Optical Mechanical Engineer
• Design tooling that would enable an eye-tracking simulated eyeball to replace a person’s head, & eye• The available tooling was not strong enough for AR-VR design requirements.
Ar/Vr Integration Optical Systems Engineer
• Worked with AR/VR alignment and placement tool design engineers to ensure AR/VR tooling design met prescribed accuracy (5 microns), and manufacturability for AR/VR products.• AR/VR requirements for ARVR applications. Worked with AR/VR product design engineers to be sure components had mounting features for AR/VR tooling requirements.• Used NX (1 yr) to design tooling and assemblies for ARVR assemblies.
Integration Engineer
• Evaluates Optical and Mechanical Assembly Tooling for manufacturing functionality, using projection optics.• Used SW and NX cad software.• Resides in San Jose, CA, but 100% remote in Redmond, WA
Optical Mechanical Engineer
Wrote specifications for testing and aligning of optical mechanical systems and subsystems. Designed many stages (using sub-millimeter optics) and mechanism which utilized kinematic principles, cams, precision screws and flexures to achieve stability. These stages had precise movements and very small footprints. They were lockable and maintained their position when locked and after being subjected to shock (20g), vibration and thermal stress. Designed tools and fixtures to aid in alignment, fabrication, gluing, and assembly of components. Designed unique method to change distance between 8 fibers to compensate for magnification change. Developed test procedures to test designs for shock, thermal, and other parameters
Optical Mechanical Engineer
• Defined, developed, and prototyped optical-mechanical systems for flow cytometry. • Developed architecture for next-gen instrument optical design.• Designed the reduced-size optical system for the forward scatter optical system. • Wrote specifications for testing and aligning optical-mechanical systems and sub-systems. Designed many stages (using sub-millimeter optics) and mechanisms that used kinematic principles, cams, precision screws, and flexures to achieve stability.• Designed tools and fixtures to aid in alignment, fabrication, gluing, and assembly. • Developed test procedures to test designs for shock, thermal, and other parameters.
Optical Mechanical Engneer
Design optical mechanical components and system for new systems.
Sr. Mchanical Engineer
• Designing precision mechanisms and fixtures for aligning assemblies for new product.• Documented released drawings, purchased parts specification, and BOM• Worked closely with vendors to assure parts were compliant with specifications.
Opto-Mechanical Engr.
Designed very small and innovative mounts for mirrors, lenses and other components. These mounts had a footprint about the size of a sugar cube. They were precisely located, adjustable in two axes, lockable, and were able to withstand 10g of force. Designed ultra- small beam expanders, wave plate holders and mounting fixtures for other electro-optical devices. Designed tooling for assembling these mounts. Integrated these mounts and components into the ultra-compact sensor head, also developed methods for aligning the sensor head.
Opto-Mechanical Engineer
Primary Opto-mechanical engineer in charge of integration of optical, electronic, and mechanical aspects for new optical instruments which look for exo- planets around other stars. Developed innovative methods for mounting mirrors, small lenses, spectrograph, fiber optics, and many other optical components. Components usually were very small and needed precision alignment. Interfaced with optical engineers using Zemax spreadsheets to optimize the layout of these instruments. Used FEA analyses when necessary to prove design functionality. • Designed, fabricated, built and installed three observatory grade instruments in three years. • All mechanical mounts were designed using kinematic principles and attention was paid to minimize thermal effects. • Instruments had to be completely isolated from outside environmental conditions and very stable because data was taken and then compared to data taken years earlier.
