In the last five years, has obtained a building in the Houston Museum District, hired a full-time staff, presented programming that has included Poet Laureate Rita Dove, Tony Award winner Sarah Jones, Whitney Biennialist Theaster Gates, author Wes Moore, turntablist DJ Spooky, the Slab Car Parade and Family Festival, the Vagina Monologues, author and Pulitizer Prize winner Isabell Wilkerson, author and Caine Prize winner Tope Folarin and symposia on the African Presence in Mexico and Afropolitans in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Africana Studies. The Museum hosted the first ever national community service project for the American Association of Museums national meeting in Houston, had museum originated exhibitions ROUX travel to the University of Arkansas and the Corridor Gallery in Brooklyn and the Eleanor Merritt Retrospective travel to Le Musee fpc in New Orleans during Prospect 3, produced two National Winners and one First Runner Up in the Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series, and exhibited the work of renowned artists Otabenga Jones, Ellen Kaplowitz, Benito Huerta and the award winning Kinsey Collection, and hosts the Houston African Film Festival. Our programming takes place in our space and others, including the Menil Collection, SHAPE Community Center, the Gregory School and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. We have collaborated with the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Project Row Houses, the American Archaeological Association, the University of Houston, the Houston Arts Alliance Folklore Program and community-based groups. In this way, we influence the culture of our city outside of the simple confines of our building, becoming, in essence, a community and not simply an organization in search of an audience.As a contemporary Museum, HMAAC is redefining what it means to be an African American cultural institution.
