    Investigated the allosteric behavior of human liver pyruvate kinase. Used activity assays with allosteric activators and inhibitors to study catalytic behavior in the final step of glycolysis: transfer of a phosphate group from phosphoenol pyruvate to adenosine diphosphate. Used a divalent cation series to investigate the role of Mg2+, which sits in the active site of pyruvate kinase.

    Identifying ion pairing and measuring its strength between electron donor and acceptor molecules are among the keys to understanding the underlying mechanisms in organic photovoltaic cells, a burgeoning field in renewable energy technology. I synthesized small organic molecules, such as carbonyl-substituted fluorenes, for use as model charge acceptors. I studied these compounds in the presence of electrolytes using NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and pulse radiolysis in order to observe ion pairing and to measure association constants and ion pairing strength. My research provides a useful connection between the molecular structure and performance of organic photovoltaic cells.This work was published in the Journal of Physical Chemistry B, with myself as the first author, DOI: 10.1021/acs.jpcb.5b11893.
