John Heon holds a doctorate in English with a concentration in psychology and the history of science from the University of Pennsylvania, where he received the Arts and Sciences Distinguished Teaching Award, the Dean’s Scholar Award for Outstanding Graduate Student in English, a Benjamin Franklin Fellowship, a Mellon Dissertation Fellowship, and the Penn Student Course Review’s “Hall of Fame Professor” designation. He has also taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Marquette University.For over twenty years, Dr. Heon has helped students build the skills and knowledge needed to maximize their intellectual potential and find career paths that lead to both professional success and personal fulfillment. He has extensive experience in writing instruction, admissions advising, study skills training, and career counseling, and has served as an advisor for Rhodes and Fulbright Scholarship applicants at Penn. His network of contacts among top academic institutions and leaders in various fields enables him to increase the opportunities and resources available to students and find those that best match their needs and goals. He often works with students who have academic or career problems related to ADD/ADHD, depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, autism, trauma, or social-behavioral issues. In these cases he operates in close consultation with the psychiatrists, psychologists, teachers, and parents involved to ensure a coordinated approach that optimizes the effectiveness of all efforts.Dr. Heon’s areas of scholarly interest include psychological interpretations of modern literature and visual art, avant-garde comic aesthetics, relationships between technology, culture, and the environment, and US-Asia cultural exchange. He is a founding Co-Director of the Philadelphia Avant-Garde Studies Consortium (www.pasc-arts.org ) and serves on the Advisory Board of the Penn premed journal, “Synapse,” and the Board of Directors of the Brewton Foundation.
