Chemring Detection Systems, Charlotte, NC – Contract Software Engineer CurrentSole software engineer on a R&D team where I developed embedded firmware for commercial and military chemical and biological detection systems in multi-tasking C on a Microchip PIC32 processor. My work included controlling and monitoring dc motors, switches, near field communication devices, developing and tuning PID Loop controls for heaters and thermo-electric coolers, generating PWM for stepper motors and ultrasound generators. Also developed tasks for processing incoming bit streams parsing out commands, downloading scripts, and reporting/logging progress. Control and monitoring was implemented via discrete I/O and vectored interrupts along with I2C, SPI bus, UARTS w/ character/command parsing. Work included using schematics, meters, scopes, and the processor IDE to debug and integrate hardware and software.

Embedded firmware development for consumer and commercial wireless lighting controls.

Embedded firmware development for OEM displays, marine controls, and control firmware for studio lighting products. Maintained and developed new C code under Free RTOS, WinCE, and proprietary OS's running on PSoC and PIC32 processors. Software Engineer, Embedded development PowerPC processor, C++, Nucleus OS. Designed and developed fault handling, logging, and clock arbitration firmware using OOAD methodology. Arbitration was a complex concept as the modules involved did not know how many others were participating. Also took over maintenance of automatic test maintenance, using TestStand and LabVIEW.

Firmware/product engineer: Product real-time embedded firmware development in Nucleus/C++, Zoran SOC (ARM 7 processor). Developed routines to control/access discrete device real time clock chip and simulate ring tones, etc by modulating tone chip via I2C bus. Liaison with Taiwan based software partner, traveled to Taiwan to expedite development. As firmware effort diminished and pilot runs started shipping from China I became product troubleshooter. Investigated hardware and software problems detected by in house staff, determined cause and effected solution or handed off to hardware or software development groups.

Test Engineer: Development of automatic test console software in Tcl/Tk, C/C++, and assembler. Developed GUIs, Tcl extensions in C, and instrument drivers via GPIB and I2C. Test console debug, integration, and redesign. Designed unique self-test in assembly for telecom boards running X86 processors. Designed self-relocating software to boot and copy itself from PCM-CIA cards and relocate itself to facilitate full memory testing. Embedded development included BOOTP and TFTP for Motorola 683XX processors and creation of full UDP/IP stacks. Used OOA/D for higher level language development efforts in Posix/C.

Engineer: Design and and development of material handling system control hardware and software, and direction of 11 engineers and techs. This system monitored and controlled a Litton Miniload, 182 sensors, laser scanners, 12 terminals, and 24 environmental chambers with pneumatic door controls. System was reviewed in Modern Material Handling magazine. HARM (missile) test equipment software development, integration, debug, and lead test software engineer for several missile component test stands. Tasked with software/firmware development, hardware/software integration and debug for most of these same test systems. Developed instrument drivers, stimulus response of test equipment, 4 axis motion control. Test equipment tiger team lead engineer, directing engineers and techs in our mission to keep all test equipment up 24/7. Product software development for AWS-M missile using pre-UML OOA/D methods.
