The phased construction in which i helped to deliver comprises of a new trailer park (for the adjacent paper mill), new fuel feed hall, boiler hall, turbine and combined water treatment facility, administration building and external fuel gas treatment facility for the EfW section of the scheme.We also introduced a attenuation pond in which will be provided to the eastern side of the site to offer added volume in the event of a flood.This meant it was a controlled means to de-water the site during the construction phase and provides much needed material to profile and stabilise the ground for the footprint of the Plant and site construction village.The first stage of the plant itself involved the construction of a concrete waste storage bunker which includes driving contiguous CFA piles to a depth of 25m to give a self-supporting cofferdam 50m x 30m by 6m deep.This method of construction in which i helped deliver offerd clear access for the bulk excavation and also produces programme benefits in relation to the speed of construction for supporting walls.There after construction of the main building elements including Turbine Hall, Tipping Hall, Technical Rooms and Administration Building will commence.

The Leeds RERF was the sixth project of its type undertaken by myself with Clugston Construction, and the fourth design and build project for repeat client Veolia. The design and construction of the facility was undertaken by Clugston, working in Joint Venture with process partner, CNIM. It has the ability to process some 214,000 tonnes of black bin waste each year, generating up to 15Mw of reusable electricity to the National Grid. The facility also provides combined heat and power (CHP) to local businesses. The waste passes through a pre-treatment plant where any recyclable materials, such as cardboard, plastic, ferrous and nonferrous metals are removed for recycling. The remaining non-recyclable materials pass by elevated conveyor into the Energy Recovery Facility.The most striking feature of the building for me is the 42metre high, arched glulam laminated timber frame superstructure (believed to be the largest timber structure of its type in Europe). It is being clad with translucent polycarbonate sheeting to the north face and has a 1,800m2 living green wall to the south elevation.Additional civil engineering and building works undertaken by myself was:Approximately 12,000m3 of reinforced concreteA- 4-metre-deep bunker with 26-metre-high wallsTurbine hall, tipping hall, technical roomsBottom ash building incorporating a green living roofA seven storey administration block to house both Veolia and Leeds City Council employeesdesign, installation and commissioning of all mechanical and electrical building services including the facility to heat the administration block’s domestic hot water using steam generated by the process facility.I also constructed a visitors’ viewing walkway cantilevering over the living wall at a height of some 23 metres.
