The AMS-02 experiment is a state-of-the-art particle physics detector, operating on the starboard truss of the International Space Station. A pump failure in the AMS-02 cooling system prompted the development of AMS-02.1 – a repair mission to install the Upgraded Tracker Thermal Pump System (UTTPS).Assembled, tested, and delivered flight hardware for launch to the ISS. Participated in crew operability testing and astronaut training with APO hardware in numerous Active Response Gravity Offload System (ARGOS) and Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) training runs.
Orbital Debris R&D Scientist
Investigation of optical measurement techniques for acquiring information on orbital debris. Techniques developed will be used to supplement measurements which are taken with telescopes to acquire brightness, size, rotation rates and material information of orbital debris. Laboratory data will be used to measure photometric and spectroscopic data of spacecraft materials as a ground-based model for telescopic data.
Graduate Research Assistant
Graduate student on 3-D printing of glass study, one of a handful of 3-D glass projects worldwide. Individually funded by the Air Force Research Lab and helped secure lab funding from private companies. Demonstrated process by printing the world’s first glass fiber printed lens and other 3D parts/trusses. Research will allow companies more design freedom/complicated geometries previously unavailable with glass and can be used to produce high-quality optical materials. > Developed a fiber-fed process from scratch, feeding glass fibers with 90-125 µm diameters into a laser generated melt pool, and then moving a stage underneath the deposited fiber to print complex 3D parts. Design of fiber feeder went through multiple iterations and rounds of problem solving. Changed the optical setup of the laser to achieve appropriate process parameter windows.> Studied the diffusion of optical property modifiers in localized laser heated melts.> Implemented spectroscopic and pyrometric sensors for closed loop feedback control.> Supervised and coached rotating groups of undergraduate students who worked on individual project tasks. > Lead author on three papers presented at conferences and second author of two journal papers detailing research accomplishments.
