About John Howchin

John Howchin is Chairman and CEO of Transition Inc, through which he provides advisory and speaking services.He is the Global Ambassador for the UN convened Global Tailings Management Institute and the co-convener of the Investor Mining and Tailings Safety Initiative, setup post the tragic Brumadhino accident in Brazil. He is also a Special Advisor for the Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030 which will address key systematic risks that challenge the sectors ability to meet the increasing demand for the low carbon transition.Between 2010 and 2021 John served as a Board Member of the Mistra Asset Management Committee.John has been working within the responsible investment community for the last 20 years and is the former Secretary-General of the Council on Ethics for the First, Second, Third and Fourth Swedish national pension funds. At the Council he initiated and lead hundreds of corporate engagements on all kinds of sustainability and ethics related issues. Before that, as the first Senior Analyst being responsible for environmental stewardship at Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM) in Oslo, he wrote the initial Climate Change expectations document, initiated climate change engagement with the portfolio companies and spent three years focused on corporate lobbying on climate change legislation in the US. As Research Director at GES Investment Services (Now Morningstar-Sustainalytics) he initiated the independent Engagement Forum platform, enabling investors to collectively engage with portfolio companies on all kinds of ESG issues - saving both investors and companies time and resources.25 years ago he co-founded the company Green Index, who together with the insurance company Folksam produced the first climate change index in the world, covering the companies at the Stockholm stock exchange. Green Index together with Etikanalytikerna (today ISS-Ethix) also performed the first norm-based screening for the AP-funds in 2001. John started his career at ABB where he worked with corporate sustainability and reporting.John holds a BSc in environmental science and human ecology at Goteborg University and has represented the Australian National Floorball team in the world cup twice, in 1998 and 2000.

    In 2021 the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) represented by the Church of England Pensions Board and Swedish Council on Ethics partnered to establish an independent Global Tailings Management Institute. This is based on the Investor Mining and Tailings Initiative founded in 2019 after the disaster at Brumadinho by Adam Matthews at the Church of England Pensions Board and John Howchin at the Swedish Council on Ethics for the AP-funds - a coalition of over than 100 investors with more than $20 trillion AUM.The Initiative has been influential in driving safety in the mining sector. It was awarded “2020 Stewardship Project of the Year” by the independent judging panel of the UN Principles for Responsible Investment, and we continue to work to ensure that lessons are leaned from the Brumadinho disaster across the mining industry.

    The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) co-convened the Global Tailings Review to establish an international standard for the safer management of tailings storage facilities.The resulting Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management was developed through an independent process chaired by Dr Bruno Oberle with the support of a multi-disciplinary Expert Panel and input from a multi-stakeholder Advisory Group. It involved extensive public consultation with affected communities, government representatives, investors, multilateral organisations and mining industry stakeholders.

    The Government Pension Fund Global was set up in 1990 to underpin long-term considerations when phasing petroleum revenues into the Norwegian economy. Norges Bank Investment Management manages the fund on behalf of the Ministry of Finance, which owns the fund on behalf of the Norwegian people. I was the first person to be employed by NBIM to lead work on responsible investment and environmental issues.     Green Index pioneered and launched the first climate change index in the world, asking the companies on the Stockholm Stock Exchange to disclose their carbon footprint. This was backed by the Swedish insurance company Folksam and financial newspaper Finanstidningen. The index also asked for disclosures on biodiversity impacts, water usage and use of ozone depleting substances. The work was later passed on to the then newly started Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and these requirements was in November 2022 passed on as law for federal companies in the USA by the Biden administration.
