I am a pediatrician in the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Division of General & Community Pediatrics and Director of the Reading and Literacy Discovery Center. My research involves the influence of home literacy environment and digital media on early brain development, using measures including MRI. I am also working on novel approaches to screening emergent skills and risk factors that are feasible for pediatric clinic, preschool and community use, and also family-centered guidance materials. Many of these involve specially designed children's books, topics to-date including safe sleep, infant calming, screen time, breastfeeding, dialogic reading and resilience. I work closely with advocacy groups on local and national levels, including the Read Aloud 15 Minutes campaign, Reach Out and Read, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. and the Children and Screens Institute.Informing these efforts is my experience guiding blue manatee children’s bookstore for almost 20 years, donated via "Golden Ticket" to form the non-profit Blue Manatee Literacy Project in 2019. I founded and run an independent children's book publisher, blue manatee press, whose is focus is books addressing pediatric health, literacy and parenting topics.
