John J. Tobin is a partner at Torys LLP in tax. John solves tax problems with his unique and broad tax experience covering (i) transactional work, (ii) planning and counsel roles, and (iii) tax controversy/transfer pricing for many of Canada’s largest businesses and financial institutions. John represents multinational and Canadian businesses in the private and public sector in a broad mix of tax matters, including tax structuring, international transactions, transfer pricing, tax controversy, corporate finance, derivatives, securitization and mergers and acquisitions. His experience includes representation of international and domestic businesses, banks, financial institutions, mutual funds and government agencies in domestic and cross-border transactions, infrastructure, energy (including wind, solar and hydro), public private partnerships, financial products, lending and securitizations, income funds, managed assets and leasing. John is also Co-Director and a sessional instructor of the Osgoode Hall Law School Tax LLM Program.Specialties: Tax including tax controversy, particularly of managed assets, structured finance, leasing, equipment finance, derivatives, financial products and institutions, power including wind, solar, hydro, and gas, cross border transactions, securitization, tax shelters and corporate reorganizations.John volunteers for number of special organizations - he has just completed being the Immediate Past Chair of the Board of Directors of Michael Garron Hospital following 2 years of being Chair and 2 years of being Vice Chair. He is a former (i) adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School (International Tax), (ii) Vice Chair of the Ontario Bar Association Tax Committee, (iii) President of the Osgoode Hall Law School Alumni Association, (iv) director of the Canadian Tax Foundation, (v) director of Rethink Breast Cancer Foundation (and former chair of the board), and (vi) director of the Canadian Finance and Leasing Association.
