The threefold mission of the Purposeful Planning Institute is to 1) explore and share Best Practices for Legacy Families and Families in Business, 2) foster more frequent and effective collaboration among the advisors and consultants serving those families, and 3) to provide resources and guidance which will help our members build and grow thriving and sustainable practices.The Purposeful Planning Institute is a rapidly growing virtual community which gathers weekly for one hour to 90 teleconversations and webinars with thought leaders and innovators. The Institute is governed by a Council of Deans who represent 14 different realms of knowledge and wisdom which are critical for the success of advisors, consultants, and family office professionals. The Purposeful Planning Institute is approaching 350 Collaborators (the term we use for our members) representing more than twenty-one different disciplines and professions which serve Legacy Families and Families in Business. We believe PPI is the highest value, lowest cost professional development and educational organization of its kind in the world.This virtual community gathers physically once a year at a two day event known as the Rendezvous. Rendezvous 2013 brought 183 people from around the globe to discuss best practices for legacy families and families in business. The Rendezvous is an Un-Conference, unlike anything you have ever experienced before. Rendezvous 2014 begins the evening of July 30, 2014.

The Purpose of the Purposeful Planning Institute (“PPI”) is three fold: 1) explore and share best practices for legacy families and families in business, 2) be a catalyst for more frequent and effective collaboration in the service of those clients, and 3) assist our members in building thriving and sustainable practices.We believe that there has been, and continues to be, a meaningful evolution in the way professional advisors can serve their clients. We want to emphasize a client-centric service model in which the relationship with the client, and their family, is much deeper--in terms of trust, communication and shared goals and purpose--than the typical transactional or expert model.The Purposeful Planning Institute is the home of the Seven Keys of Purposeful Trusts and Gifts as well as the Six Paradigms of Purposeful Planning and the Eight Building Blocks for Flourishing Families. But in addition to these concepts we have created an incredible library of resources representing the thought leadership of innovators across a wide spectrum of discplines and professions.Membership and access to both our live teleconferences and webinars and our library of professional resources is available for only $600 a year ($300 a year for Non-Profits, students and academics). This makes PPI the lowest cost, highest value learning and professional development environment for advisors and consultants to legacy families and families in business found anywhere in the world. Our Best of PPI DVDs and Podcasts are incredibly effective and affordable ways to learn from the thoughts leaders and innovators who are shaping the future of professional services to HNW and UHNW clients and their families. By expressing their life wisdom, values and hopes for the future well-being of the next generations of their family, their estate planning documents will have a lasting and positive impact on their heirs. These concepts are so "Revolutrionay" they trace their roots back to our first President, George Washington. His hand-written will reflects three "Purposeful Clauses", the most powerful of which was his gift to his nephews of his swords.

As the Managing Collaborator of the Purposeful Planning Collaboration I host our interactive interviews with thought leaders and industry innovators. Family Wealth Transitions & Solutions empowers parents and grandparents to pass more than money to their heirs through the six paradigms of Purposeful Planning.We assist families prepare inheritors and beneficiaries for the transition of wealth and maximize the effectiveness of their family meetings and intra-family communications.We assist trustees and family office professionals by increasing their generative impact through best practices and resources. We provide philanthropic consulting services to family foundations who want to increase the participation of younger generation family members in the family's philanthropic mission. We assist non-profits who are interested in preserving and honoring their donor's intent and legacy.

During the almost 11 years he was a partner in the international law firm of Holme Roberts and Owen headquartered in Denver, Colorado "John A" worked with families of wealth across the United States. He was privileged for five of these years to work alongside James E. “Jay” Hughes, Jr., the author of Family Wealth – Keeping It in the Family and noted family wealth counselor/advisor. He assisted Mr. Hughes in founding the Collaboration for Flourishing Families (CFF) and served on that organization’s initial governing board for almost three years. CFF is composed of 100 of the preeminent family wealth consultants, family business consultants, wealth psychologists, family office professionals, lawyers and trustees who serve the wealthiest families in the United States and abroad. Working with a team of family wealth psychologists for more than five years, John A explored the best practices families have adopted to successfully transition their wealth to the rising generations. That collaboration led John A to significant breakthroughs in the areas of a family’s human, intellectual and social capital. Along with a number of collaborators he has pioneered new distribution and governance models for trusts and family entities including the concept of “Markers of Maturity.” He has also developed the concepts of the “Generative Trustee”, the seven secrets of the Purposeful Trust™, the six paradigms of Purposeful Planning™ and the eight Building Blocks for flourishing families. Today he also trains attorneys, wealth managers, financial planners, trustees, and family office professionals in these concepts through his Purposeful Planning Institute.

While a partner at Brown, Drew, Massey & Sullivan John A was privileged to work with clients across the State of Wyoming. During his years at Brown, Drew, Massey & Sullivan he finished his second Tax Management portfolio and was admitted as a fellow to the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. He served on the Executive Committee of the firm and was serving as Chairman of that committee at the time he left Brown, Drew to join Holme Roberts & Owen.
