About John Joyce
Since beginning my journey in software, I've touched many tools, systems and technologies. Mobile applications in Objective-C & React Native, app servers in PHP & NodeJS, mission-critical microservices in Java & C++, low-latency streaming systems with Kafka + Samza, an OLTP query engine built on GraphQL & Apache Calcite, & big data processing on HDFS using Hive, Spark, Presto. At LinkedIn, I took an interest in hard problems in distributed systems. First, I worked on protecting the platform from large-scale scraping and fake account attacks on the Anti-Abuse Engineering team. Then, I helped develop a portable query engine providing a unified interface for issuing queries against data stored across compute environments, leveraging Apache Calcite & GraphQL. At Acryl, I’m aiming to help companies tame the complexity of the modern data stack by making internal company data easily discoverable & debuggable.I currently lead product development of DataHub, an open source platform that helps companies understand and manage their data assets across siloed platforms & tools. https://datahubproject.ioI’m always willing to chat open source, data engineering, and tech. Let’s talk!
Listed skills include Ios Development, Objective C, Unix, C++, and 13 others.

I engaged in undergraduate research with Professor Xiaobo Hu. I am using HSPICE and Synopsys to simulate memory circuits (focus on SRAM) using next generation nano-transistors including Tunnel FETs and ambipolar Silicone Nanowire FETs. We are focused on using such transistors to simplify traditional CMOS circuit designs by reducing required transistor density.
Co-Founder
On December 1, 2015, my classmate Devon Krapcho and I discussed the initial idea of an ephemeral group messaging app we called 'SquadSnap'. By mid January 2016, I had built a working iOS build ready for beta testing. On January 25, SquadSnap launched its beta test, initially bringing on 30 beta testers. After seeing promising metrics, with the app's frequency of use following an upward trend as the beta period continued, Devon and I decided to enter the Shurz Innovation Challenge, an innovation competition hosted by the Innovation Park incubator. On February 17th we presented and demonstrated the application to a panel of 4 judges, taking home a $1500 coding prize. By late February, SquadSnap had officially become an LLC, and I had officially become one of its two cofounders. NOTE: In early 2017, SquadSnap was taken down from the app store. Shortly after we'd released the application, Snapchat implemented an extremely similar ephemeral groups feature that is widely used today.
Software Engineering Intern
Added customization options to Visa Checkout iOS demo used by broader team to facilitate merchant integration.Implemented concept augmented reality shopping app (iOS).Designed and built initial prototype of major Visa Checkout partner "offers" feature.
Lead Ios Developer
As the startup's first iOS developer, I was expected to learn mobile development and help build a hyper-local, event-based social media application.Features that I had implemented included friends, groups, profiles, event feeds, comment feeds, an interactive map interface, a notification center, among others. By late January, the app was officially published on the App Store. By that point I had taken on the lead iOS role at the startup, leading a team of 3 other mobile developers.
Software Engineer
During the summer of 2015, I worked as a software developer for a Pittsburgh law firm. For the duration of my time there, I worked on a cloud-based application that the firm could use to capture detailed information about inquiries (incoming calls, emails, etc) and use this information for marketing by email at a later date. The application requirements included that it had to be able to store contact information for inquiries (including email, phone, case type, and more), had to have a user-friendly search interface, had to be able to filter contacts based on various fields and include an interface to send targeted HTML marketing emails to such subsets, had to be able to store and use prewritten HTML email templates, had to have two account types -- separate for lawyers and staff, and had to allow the lawyers to easily provision new accounts. I began the project in late June, 2015. It was completed by August 20th, 2015. Upon successful completion, I began marketing the software to other firms after attaining Joyce & Bittner's consent. To build the application, I used AWS EC2, PHP, and MySQL, HTML, CSS, jQuery.
