John Kampfner is an author, journalist and cultural leader of long standing. He is currently a Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, a regular columnist for the Guardian, Der Spiegel, Foreign Policy and politico.eu. His seventh book, 'In Search of Berlin', was published to considerable acclaim. He has just started a weekly Substack johnkampfner.substack.comHe is also Chair of the Quentin Blake Centre and Chair of Young Königswinter.In December 2015, he stepped down as Chair of Turner Contemporary after seven and a half years in which he oversaw the opening of what came to be seen as one of the most successful art galleries and cultural organisations in Britain. His journalism and authorial career have led to a number of awards including Journalist of the Year and TV Film of the Year. His books include the best selling Blair's Wars (2003), Freedom for Sale (2009), short-listed for the Orwell Prize, and the most recent best seller, Why the Germans Do It Better' (2020).He was Editor of the New Statesman 2005-2008, taking the magazine to 30-year circulation highs, and winning it a number of awards. Prior to that he was Berlin bureau chief and then Moscow bureau chief for the Daily Telegraph (1989-94), Chief Political Correspondent for the FT (1994-1998) and worked at the BBC, for the Today programme and Newsnight. He has made a number of television and radio documentaries.In 2019 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate at Bath Spa University for services to arts education and the creative industry

John Kampfner is Chief Executive of the Creative Industries Federation, the national membership organisation for all the UK's arts, creative industries and cultural education.The Federation was launched to much acclaim in November 2014 to offer a single voice across all creative disciplines and around the country, and began work at the beginning of 2015. In just a matter of months, it welcomed more than 700 members, from the largest multi-national to the smallest start-up, from art galleries, to theatres, film companies to dance studios, independent production companies to video gamers to design practices.
