I served SDL's management, board and investors in a number of roles, the most recent as its President and CEO. SDL was a small, extremely creative, efficient and lean company focused on a technology that would bring a step-change to the waste industry and provide a solution for a world beginning to "wake up" to the impact that waste plastics have on our environment. I was fortunate to have worked with an outstanding board and supportive investors that persevered with me and my team; collectively we were all driven to bring this important solution to market. Despite being technically successful with a number of ground-breaking advances, we were unable to make the company into a commercial enterprise and the company was dissolved in 2019.

As Director - Strategic Planning and later as Associate Dean - Finance, I was responsible for developing and implementing a long-range strategic plan for the Lyle School. I organized participants from all major functional areas and engaged them in various strategic planning meetings designed to reach high-level consensus about the future engineering economy and how higher education must adapt to meet new challenges and exploit future opportunities. Subsequent work assessed the existing organizational structure, programs, and curriculum to determine what human, capital and physical resources would be required to implement strategic initiatives. I later ran the Lyle School's Hart Center for Engineering Leadership, one of the key objectives from the strategic plan. We engaged a key strategic partner, the Center for Creative Leadership, to establish credibility as a research-based center dedicated to the leadership and professional development of engineering students. The Hart Center created several novel programming initiatives including an undergraduate engineering mentoring program, an engineering debate series, post-graduation career data analysis, an internship experience assessment tool, a graduate student fellows program with an honors distinction and an engineering faculty fellows program.

Lyco Energy was a small oil and gas, exploration and production company. I administered or managed many of the company’s major business relationships particularly those involving equity investors, commercial and investment banking, outsourced human resources, oil and gas marketing, and general corporate legal counsel. I was directly responsible for marketing and hedging activities and had oversight responsibility for many other administrative functions including finance, human resources, and information systems. I developed an expertise in financial modeling of the company used for equity valuation, senior and mezzanine debt analysis, understanding tax liability, and for tracking performance metrics. My work also initiated efforts to bring oil and gas midstream infrastructure to Lyco’s primary producing area with the result being gas price improvement and more efficient transportation of crude. A subsequent initiative led to significant oil price improvement. I built a more informative and flexible capital management system which allowed company management to better manage cash by rapidly incorporating new information from a rapidly changing business environment.
