John is the founder and Chairman of the Board of SureTec, a top 20 surety company in the United States. Its primary insurance company operates in 50 states, is rated A "Excellent" by A.M. Best. John owns controlling interest but it is partially owned by an International Insurance Group.In the early 80's, John founded Universal Surety of America (USA). Under his direction USA became the largest surety in Texas. John sold the company to Sam Zell's Capsure Holdings in 1994 and became the CEO/Director of USA/Western, affiliated with Western Surety Company. In 1997 they sold the group and John became a founding director of CNA Surety.Following an extended holiday (a/k/a 2 year non-compete) John formed SureTec. While building a new Texas franchise, John helped HCC Insurance Holdings get into the surety business; in fact, he sold HCC a 23.5% stake in SureTec. John found several acquisitions and assisted HCC founder Stephen L Way in completing six acquisitions that led to HCC becoming a top 10 surety company. For HCC John served as their initial Chairman of American Contractors Indemnity Company (ACIC). In 2009 SureTec repurchased HCC's interest in the company.Seeing the benefit of having large public companies as minority partners John sold 20% of SureTec to Argo Group International in 2011 but still retains about 70% ownership. The key partners/officers of SureTec own about 10%. John is on the board of the Surety & Fidelity Association of America (SFAA) and is the Past Chairman of the National Association of Independent Sureties (NAIS). John's has always been a strong supporter and an associate member of the National Association of Surety Bond Producers (NASBP).A former member of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) and an active member of the World Presidents' Organization (WPO).
