About John Lane Schultz

My work focuses on the theory and practice of distributed systems. I concentrate particularly on data replication, multicast, reliable transport, and security in these areas. I lead the design and development of data replication technologies that enable a broad range of tradeoffs between replication semantics and performance requirements. These technologies range from high performance ACID database replication in wired networks down to Overtaken By Events dictionary replication in wireless, disrupted, battlefield environments. My work in multicast systems and reliable transport similarly ranges from architecting highly resilient, low latency, high throughput, global multicast communication across the internet down to persistent multicast dissemination, reliable transport, and store and forward systems on tactical edge networks. I also design and implement security appropriate for these different environments and applications.I am a creator of the Spread Group Communication Toolkit, the Spines Overlay Messaging System, Congruity (global total ordering system), and the StdUtil library.
