John Lazar is a Managing Director responsible for assessing and structuring investments in Burford’s complex strategies business and overseeing Burford’s secondary market activity. He also oversees Burford’s arbitration group assessing and underwriting investments in treaty and commercial arbitrations globally.Immediately prior to his current role, Mr. Lazar oversaw the growth of Burford’s substantial business in the UK and Europe and Burford’s private funds platform. In addition to holding senior leadership roles in Burford’s core business in the US and Europe, he has overseen Burford’s secondary market business for several years, engaging with dozens of hedge funds and other institutional investors who participate in that market. Before that, Mr. Lazar managed the assessment of new matters globally, from initiation to conclusion, including their progress through the Commitments Committee.

Experience in securities fraud, insolvency proceedings, structured financial products litigation and complex contractual disputes representing large corporations, startup companies and investment funds.

Experience in breadth of matters including securities fraud, accounting fraud, patent analysis and litigation, trade secret theft, merger litigation, proxy contests and complex contractual issues in state and federal trial and appellate courts, and arbitration proceedings.

Experience in civil tort litigation, primarily representing plaintiffs in personal injury and medical malpractice claims.
