About John Lewis

An Alabama native, who graduated from Auburn University School of Forestry in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Science. After graduating from Auburn University, John served as a Research Assistant I for the University through the Strategic Environmental Research Development Program (SERDP). During that time, John quantified carbon density in 20 managed longleaf pine forests (including soil) across the Southeastern United States, ranging from Kisatchie National Forest, LA to Camp Lejeune, NC. In 2017, John worked as a Field Technician for the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON)/Battelle. During his three years with the company, John worked in Gainesville, FL; Newton, GA; and Fresno, CA. John's main role with the company was to collect filed and laboratory data, check for accuracy, and maintain research records. His additional duties were to review sample protocols and suggest research approaches to maximize efficiencies. Supervise research personnel and help establish and maintain research site plots. As of 2020 John began working at Icarus Ecological Services as a Project Ecologist. John's duties include Wetland Delineation, Listed Species Surveys, Tree Survey's, Wetland Mitigation, Mitigation Banking, and Habitat Restoration for the Panhandle of Florida, ranging from Bay County, FL to Walton County, FL.

Maintain instruments and collect samples, specimens, and data across NEON domains through field sampling, field observations, and experiments. Collect field and laboratory data, check data for accuracy and maintains research records. Review sampling protocols, and suggest research approaches that maximize outcomes and efficiencies. Supervise research personnel and student employees. Help establish and maintain research site plots. Describe annual variation of the presence and abundance of plant species. Measure the vegetation structure and mapping of free standing woody stem, and record the types and structure of woody species to understand changes in woody biomass stocks and fluxes. Record the seasonal progression of critical biological process and timing of ecological events in plants. Conduct Leaf Area Index (LAI) using the Digital Hemispherical Photo (DPH) System for the ecological interest of plant biomass, plant productivity carbon balance, plant diversity, and diversity of plant cover. Conduct and herb clip harvest to estimate the herbaceous biomass produce. Collect samples of canopy foliage to help track changes in chemical and physical properties on sunlit foliage over time. Conduct fine root biomass stock and Coarse Down Wood (CDW). Collect litter fall (PVC elevated traps) and Ground litter traps to provide essential data for understanding vegetative Carbon fluxes over time. Collect soil core collection and deployment of soil incubations for Nitrogen-transformation measurements, soil moisture, and soil pH. Mark-recapture method to evaluate the dynamics of small mammal diversity and disease across time and space. Collect mosquito specimens for DNA barcoding. Collect beetle specimens (Coleoptera: Carabidae) using pitfall traps to indicate environmental change due to their sensitivity to habitat disturbance. Collect ticks using a drag cloth method to measure the quantity of ticks in different location between different times.
