Design EngineerPure Design & Engineering Jan 2015 - PresentAuckland, New ZealandComposite engineering solutions for race yachts and high-performance cruisers. Pure Design and Engineering is at the forefront of boat design/engineering and maintains close working relationships with the best designers, builders and race teams around the world. As a Design Engineer, I am involved in the design/production process from the start. This includes an initial consultation with the designer on manufacture techniques, initial weight estimates and looking at potential problematic areas to ensure that detailed design down the track goes smoothly. Once the project comes to life I work fundamentally on ensuring all laminates and detailing is structurally sound and meets scantling/international rule requirements. This process also involves considerable dialogue with the builder to ensure detailing aligns with their experience, expertise and project scope. The role requires not just the technical engineering side, but effective communication with boat designers, builders and others involved in the design and construction process to ensure a quality result and project success. -
Design EngineerClever Fox Projects Limited Jun 2011 - Nov 2014AucklandSince finishing university I have worked as a Design Engineer at Clever Fox Projects Ltd. Clever Fox Projects is a boutique engineering consultancy that is marine industry focused and specialises in the engineering design of composite material structures.Through all of these projects, a robust engineering design process has been followed. This includes having initial discussions with clients, designers, and manufacturers, identifying the various load cases and constraints, assessing structural hierarchy, and considering safety factors. My involvement continues through to the detailed engineering design and construction drawings.Developing my structural engineering skillset through composite design has enhanced my understanding of fundamental mechanics of materials. I have developed a deeper understanding of the various stress components acting within a structure and how to optimise laminate lay-ups for the specific bending, shear, and deflection requirements.I have had extensive exposure to various maritime rules including the ISO 12215 series, ABS High-Speed Craft, DNV High-Speed Light Craft, and the GL range (High-Speed Craft, Racing Yacht, and Large Modern Yacht Rigs). I have also been extensively involved with many Maritime New Zealand design approval assessments, including Part 40A, C, D, and E and have completed numerous stability assessments of various vessels utilising Hydromax.Although the company specialises in composites I have had significant exposure in designing steel and alloy structures including specifying the manufacturing details and cut files. Project highlights include two unique hydraulic powered lifting keels and keel cases, multiple keels for high performance racing yachts and their machining details, and the lengthening and widening of a 75’ ex. Navy patrol craft.
