I graduated B Sc (Hons) in Natural Philosophy (Physics) from the University of Glasgow in 1958, then spent 2 years as a Health Physicist with the UK Atomic Energy Authority. From 1960-64 I carried out research at the Royal College of Science and Technology (which later became University of Strathclyde), on thin-film dielectrics, leading to the award of my PhD (Glasgow) in 1964. Later that year I moved to Sydney, Australia, with my wife and daughter, to accept an appointment with the CSIRO as a Research Scientist working mainly in electrical standards and superconducting devices. where I remained for the next 27 years. I returned to the UK from 1992- 2009 on short-term appointments at Strathclyde University and at the National Physical Laboratory. In 2009 I retired to Tasmania, Australia. I continue interacting with CSIRO and hold honorary positions with the Australian Institute of Physics.
