About John Mackenzie
Emeritus Professor, Curtin University .Currently a part-time Senior Research Scientist at PathWest, Perth; Honorary Professor in the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences at the University of Queensland, St Lucia; and Honorary Senior Principal Fellow at the Burnet Institute, Melbourne.Currently, I am a member of the One Health High Level Expert Panel of FAO, OIE, UNEP and WHO; a member of the WHO Emergency Committee on the Spread of Poliovirus; and a member of the WHO Emergency Committee on COVID. I served previously as a member of the Steering Committee of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (from 2002-17, Chair 2008-10); a foundation Member of the Asia-Pacific Strategy for Emerging Diseases (2004-2017); and Chair of the Emergency Committee for Influenza H1N1 Pandemic Influenza (2009-10). I am also a member of the International Health Regulations Roster of Experts.I was elected to the American Academy of Microbiology in 1996, and to the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering in 2015. I was Secretary-General of the International Union of Microbiological Sciences (1999-2005), and a member of its Executive Board (1995-1999). I was elected as President of the Australian Society for Microbiology (1992-94), and as President of the Asia-Pacific Society for Medical Virology (2000-2003). I was the inaugural recipient of the Mahathir Science Award of the Malaysian Academy of Sciences in 2005, and the inaugural recipient of the Premier’s Research Fellowship of the Science Council of Western Australia in 2004. I was elected as a Distinguished International Fellow of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in 2021. I was appointed to Officer in the Order of Australia in 2001.Together with my colleague, Dr Martyn Jeggo, I initiated the World One Health Congresses in 2011, with the first congress held in Melbourne. I was a co-founder of the One Health Platform, and it’s successor, the Global One Health Community.
