He championed NAVTEQ’s expansion into software, traffic, and China.NAVTEQ was the market-leading map and technology provider that created the global GPS navigation revolution. During his tenure, the business changed from paper maps (e.g., Rand McNally) to the rich location-based services we use today.NAVTEQ was a turnaround company. When John joined, it was in-debt, losing money and generating $50 million in revenue. It grew revenue to over $1 billion, went public in 2004 and was purchased by Nokia in 2008 for $8.1 billion. Today, the company is known as HERE Technologies and is owned by a consortium of German auto companies (Audi, BMW, Daimler) and Intel.John established a Global Marketing and Strategy organization to accelerate growth via expansion of customers, markets, and products. The team's efforts led to a dramatic increase in product offerings, geographic coverage and new customers that drove a 20x revenue growth.He built a new Connected Services organization that led NAVTEQ’s diversification. He acquired and integrated multiple software and data companies to help NAVTEQ scale its business. He had a wide range of roles from business planning to finance to development.John participated in the openings for two major Disney developments – Epcot Center and Disneyland Resort Paris.For Disneyland Resort Paris, he was Vice President of Financial Planning. At opening, the Paris resort included a Magic Kingdom theme park, six hotels totaling 5,000 rooms, retail, and other resort developments. It cost $4 billion to open and was developed in partnership with the French State.John built a finance organization that included eight groups and over 300 people. The group was responsible for overseeing the theme park, resort, and development financial activities.When the Paris project was in the early planning and construction stages, John was Director, Development Finance. He built a financial planning team to manage development costs and played a critical role during the negotiations of the master development agreement with the French State.At opening, the Paris resort struggled due to cultural, marketing, and financial issues. John’s role transitioned to help with its restructuring. Today, Disneyland Resort Paris attracts nearly 20 million annual visitors and is the largest theme park in Europe.For Epcot Center, he was a Manager of Business Planning and Development for Imagineering. He provided production and project management leadership for many elements within the park.Epcot Center was the second theme park developed at Walt Disney World in Florida and remains one of its crown jewels.
