The Surface… Show more Management of the standards and protocols for the operation of the Canadian Reference Climate Stations (RCS) Network, the Canadian Surface Weather (SWx) Network, and the cooperative climate network (CCN or volunteer). The 302 station Canadian RCS is managed as a network-of-networks between Environment Canada'a Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC) and contributing agencies; notably NAV CANADA, the Department of National Defence, and Agriculture and Agrifoods Canada (AAFC). The Surface Weather network is similar in design and implementation to the Reference Climate Stations (RCS) network, but deployed in support of forecast operations and numerical weather prediction for the production of severe weather, public, marine, and aviation forecasts. The SWx network consists of 600+ stations, when one considers all data collected through the network-of-networks approach. The station count includes stations for which EC has signed a contract or MoU allowing the MSC to ingest, archive, and redistribute the data collected. The Cooperative Climate Network (CCN - aka the volunteer network) consists of that group of private citizens and agencies which provide temperature and precipitation measurements (including snowfall) twice per day. These data are largely submited to the MSC through a web-based interface and are available for almost immediate use. Those data are primarily used for tracking climate variability but are equally useful to weather forecast operations.I coordinate the efforts of MSC-HQ staff, contributing agencies, and the MSC regional managers of atmospheric operations, to ensure these atmospheric monitoring networks contribue to ensuring that Canadians are equipped to make informed decisions on changing weather, water, and climate conditions.
