About John Mailey

I am a time served degree qualified mechanical design engineer with over 44 years experience in heavy, medium and light engineering. Over the past 4 decades I have developed mechanical solutions and implemented innovations for countless projects in a variety of industries, including marine engines, computers, steel, sub-sea oil & gas, saturation diving and latterly wind turbines.As a mechanical design engineer, I have the following experience:-Over 3 years gained in the invention and development of a next generation renewable turbine system, now incorporated within a new start-up renewable energy company. Prior to this, 2 years’ experience gained in the sub-sea distribution group and over 6 months in the sub-sea electronics module group, both within a global sub-sea company. This followed over 9 months experience gained in a small engineering company specialising in the design of sub-sea drilling equipment. This follows 1.5 years experience gained as a lead engineer within the Capital Drilling Equipment group of a leading international supplier to the oil & gas industry. Prior to this, a senior mechanical design engineer with 3 years’ experience gained in saturation diving systems, with the recognised world leaders in diving equipment technology. This follows 7 years’ experience as a mechanical tooling design engineer in medium engineering, designing compressed ceramic components for the steel industry. Prior to this, 15 years’ experience gained in various engineering disciplines up to senior mechanical development engineer, in a leading international computer manufacturer. This follows on from 10 years’ experience gained as an apprentice fitter then as a draughtsman in a heavy engineering environment, involving marine diesel engine design and production.

Gaining familiarity with company procedures, industry standards and regulations.Provision of factory acceptance tests and operating procedures.Driving design activity throughout each project, assisting in progress reporting, with close adherence to GEs’ design process, and ensuring rigorous execution of sound design practice and methodology. Includes the use of appropriate software and hardware tools, and ensuring applicable standards, regulations and GE procedures are followed.Within this group an idea was developed for a rotational riser coupling; allowing for a greater offset mating angle. Thus allowing drillship / rig to be stationed further from the subsea wellhead. This was submitted for patent application.

    Involved as part of the Mechanical Tooling Design group in modelling, designing and trialling of moulds for the manufacture of compressed ceramic components used to control, protect and monitor liquid steel in the continuous casting process industry. This includes rapid design calculations for the plastic bag mouldings, and producing detailed design drawings for the internal pressing mandrels, ancillary components, and of various final products. Liasing on a daily basis with our international customers concerning their tooling orders and queries, and with our local tooling supplier. As well as the daily design work, valuable experience was gained in being solely responsible for a number of special projects, such as the new design of the porous ring pressing tool, which resulted in a cost reduction of approximately 25% for each tool produced, a saving of almost £15K per annum. Also responsible for the new design of a split pressing tool for inversed tapered moulds, which enabled them to be produced three times faster and at 25% of the previous cost. Responsible for designing a completely new telescopic fill device, which eliminated the need for expensive PUR’s and moulds and drastically reduced the set-up time and costs. Also designed a variable locating fill device that could be used on a wide variety of products, cutting the cost of supplying and storage of individual fill devices.Designed a magnetic roller frame for slab caster wraps, enabling the product to be filled and the frame removed without damage to the delicate and expensive wrap material.Over 7 years’ experience gained in the use of Autocad and SolidWorks.

    Involved as part of the Server Mechanical Design group in 3D modeling of various parts of the PC system unit. This included plastic mouldings such as fan housings, card supports and lift mechanisms, as well as pressed steel parts such as the chassis and interior metal work.Was responsible for producing detailed engineering drawings to allow successful manufacture of the initial design parts, within the internal tool-room facility and external engineering vendor sites. Engineering drawings were also produced for each part and released to various production facilities world-wide.Worked closely with server manufacturing engineers and ensured that any product build problems on the box assembly line were quickly assessed and rectified. Within this group, evaluated and solved various problems, one of which required the quick design and supply of a plastic moulded lifting device for handling processor cards. All the problems encountered were successfully resolved and resulted in two patent applications being made. Was responsible, as part of the Physical Design group, for the physical layout and routing of PCB's. These PCB's covered the complete range of cards developed in Greenock, ranging from server planars, processor cards, desktop planars, small LED cards etc. The cards varied in type from two layer NIPs through to 10 layer 6S4P cards. Normally the cards were 6 layer 4S2P and the tracking used on these was a minimum of 5mils wide.Was responsible for the successful rawcard manufacture and the PCB assembly in it's initial design stages, through close liaison with the respective vendors. Nine years’ experience was gained in the use of the Catia design system, using 3D solid modeling and 2D draughting. Experience was also gained in the use of thermal simulation for optimization of PC units, using Flotherm and I-Deas software packages.

Awarded apprentice of the year.
