I've always had a passion for boating and enjoying time on the water so getting into the maritime industry was a no-brainer. After getting an Associates in Arts and Sciences from Tacoma Community College in 2017, I attended the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding and in 2018 graduated with an Occupational Associates Degree in Contemporary Wooden Boatbuilding and landed a job at James Betts enterprises where I was hired as a Composite Technician and began working on the composite superstructure, interior for a passenger ferries built for Kitsap Transit.Since the projects completion, I advanced to the become the shops inventory manager and shipping clerk. This included keeping the stock room full an organized, ensure workers had all needed supplies, warehouse components and materials bought for various projects and receiving and inspecting all incoming parts and materials. Purchasing manager was added to my list of responsibilities later on. With this added the responsibilities procuring all shop supplies and most major materials for the boat projects. This including working directly with sales representatives to find the items we need for the lowest cost as timely as possible. While my primary responsibilities have shifted to office/administration roles, I still manage to spend some time on the shop floor assisting in the various boat projects. Projects I've had a hand in include a 68' sailing yacht designed by Stephens Waring Design, a 60' Tom Wylie designed day sailor, and a 30' Riptide racing sailboat designed by Bieker Boats. I've prepared molds and lamination surfaces, assist in every step lamination process from mixing resin, cutting material, wetting material, placing material, all the way to getting the part under a leak-free vacuum bag.Recently I've been involved in prepreg carbon fiber hydrofoils for Kitsap Transits passenger ferries. This included but was not limited to cutting, placing, trimming of material, de-bulking of part several times during assembly to remove air. While doing this ensuring each layer of material is fitting into every corner and compound curve of the mold allowing no "bridging" in the part. Also involved in post curing of the parts. Ensuring proper temperatures acquired at the correct ramp up rates for adequate time to obtain a fully cured part.Operating 3 axis CNC Router, creating cut files for 2-D profiling, part surfacing/finishing, engraving, and pocketing of various materials including plywood, mdf board, composite panels, foam core and tooling foam.
