About John Mccluskey

I'm a Mechanical Engineer skilled in manufacturing practices, concise communication, design innovation, and project management. Always thinking and questioning the world around me, I've found success in product design and redesigning old projects back to life and profitability. I frequently revisit overall goals, never settling for a complicated solution when zooming out and reevaluating shows a more efficient approach. I have engineering experience and also accustomed to seeing many perspectives which I utilize in product development or challenging multi-department problems.

    Senior Mechanical Engineer
    Cascadia Motion Jul 2022 - Oct 2023
    Portland , Oregon, Us
Design of vehicle traction motors ranging in power output 200 to 600kW. I evaluated product requirements and available market components to produce competitive drive units. Integration of systems into one unit is key for customer application simplicity was my goal to keep the value proposition over competition. I optimized for power density, economics, and ease of assembly but still attractive and intuitively understood by customers. With perspectives such as thermal and fluids, mechanical, electrical HV/LV, magnetic and EMI, manufacturing, and sales in mind, I combined concerns and found solutions in designs ideal for all. Communication is key in design, keeping all concerns noted and expectations managed. I worked with all levels of the organization.I solved several long-standing problems and created testing and assembly areas that made the Mechanical Engineering Department have a space for future first builds and testing. I have tasked and instructed testing personnel and reviewed their progress and challenges. In addition to broad strokes, I worked extensively in Solidworks modeling parts to be manufactured. I created interfaces between tight/loose tolerance parts for static and dynamic interactions with inertial and electrical considerations. I worked with Solidworks PDM and use FEA to optimize solutions. I produced manufacturing drawings and request for quote items needed in volume.

  • Ssi Shredding Systems, Inc.
    Product Development Engineer
Ssi Shredding Systems, Inc. Mar 2017 - Apr 2021
    Wilsonville, Oregon, Us
As the "Uni-Shear" Product Line Manager I was responsible for the rehabilitation and fresh development of several products. "SSI Uni-Shears" are single shaft rotary shredders that have many advantages over other shredders but also require intensive design. I headed efforts to transform outdated designs of the SR900 shredder to be industry leading. I designed multiple features on the 20-ton machine that are highly valued by customers and not attempted by competitors and Kaizen improved beyond expectations. Turned a product from dormant state to hot product of multiple million-dollar projects a year. Identified key risk areas and redesigned to reduce risks or reduce effects.Concurrently designed an even larger shredder, the SR1000, a 30-ton universal shredder with competitive features on every front. Currently assessing market, risks, materials, manufacturing processes and new machining centers to upgrade capabilities. I designed bearing and drive systems for large Uni-Shears, including developing a roller-taper bearing preload plan specific to the application. I work with purchasing and order release departments regularly and create Bill of Materials and routing in CloudSuite Industrial (SyteLine). I coordinate with the Customer Service department when needed and facilitate the feedback to redesign Kaizen process.

I was also responsible for design changes and material sourcing for one-off projects to reduce wear, cost, and manufacturing time. I also took on the design and evolution of custom machinery and tooling to aid in manufacturing and rebuilding of shredder cutters. I solved a long standing fatigue problem that has lasted hundreds of millions of cycles since. I also assisted in international sales meetings and customer relations.
