Senior (Creative) Artworker At Igloo Books Ltd

Current

Northampton, United Kingdom

From 4th January 2011 to present I have been working for Igloo Books (part of the Bonnier group from 2015) and from January 2014 onwards, in a Senior (Creative) Artworker position. My Senior role involves amendment of original artwork, creation of bespoke artwork, and adaptation of existing artwork (from small childrens' books through to Encyclopedias and packaging) prior to publication, through flight-checking to print-ready PDF format, uploading of files to printers around the world via FTP, then checking proofs and advance copies. I'm also Line Manager to the Studio Team. From January 2017 I had been managing the Studio during a period of maternity cover for the Head of Studio & Production (having previously Deputised for) and I continue to communicate with other departments/customers including Publishing (Designers and Editors), Production, and Sales. I've worked through an even bigger back-catalogue since we became part of the larger Bonnier group. Imprints worked on include Igloobooks; Autumn; and various other international co-edition customers. I primarily use Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, (to CC 2023) and very occasionally QuarkXPress, where older artwork is concerned.

Jan 2014 - Present

Designer/Artworker

Igloo Books Ltd (Bonnier Publishing)

Northampton, United Kingdom

From 4th January 2011 to January 2014. I started the role in 2011 as an Artworker, then nine months later was given additional Design work, progressing to a Designer/Artworker position, where I adapted existing artwork, and created brand new artwork for publication.

Jan 2011 - Jan 2014

Graphic Designer/Mac Operator

The Guildhall Press

From 9th April 2007 to December 2010 I have been working as Graphic Designer/Mac Operator creating, producing and/or finishing artwork for local and national customers. These may take the form of any item, for example brochures, booklets, posters, leaflets, booklets and stationery; involving CMYK, spot colour and special processes. Working alongside one other graphic designer and one typesetter, I use the latest Apple Mac Pro Intel-based machines, and work in Mac OS X (10.6) using the CS5 range of Adobe software including Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat and InDesign. QuarkXPress (7.3 and 8.0) and InDesign serve equally for a lot of the artwork layout demand.I am also outputting artwork to a Xerox Docucolor 5000 digital press which is used if quick/low volume results are needed, a Screen PlateRite 4100 plate machine via Screen TrueFlow 3 flightchecking/RIP software, and a Kodak Polychrome ‘Mercury’ plate developer. I use these machines daily and also I regularly use an Epson Stylus Pro 7800 large format printer for plate proofs and posters. I liaise daily with all members of staff including GTO/Roland press operators, special process companies (eg. Foil, UV or Forme), and deal with local customers through to internationally recognised Blue-chip companies.

Apr 2007 - Dec 2010

Graphic Designer

Johnston Press - Kettering Evening Telegraph

From 22nd November 2004 to 6th April 2007 I had been working as Graphic Designer producing adverts and features for the Johnston Press publications ‘Kettering Evening Telegraph’, ‘Kettering/Corby Citizen’, and ‘The Guide’ which also appears in the Northampton Chronicle & Echo’. I was using PCs running Photoshop 7.0, QuarkXpress 3.32, Illustrator 9, and Image Ready 7.0; and an Apple Mac G3, running Mac OS 9.2 which also had QuarkXPress 3.32 and Photoshop 7.0. I also had access to a HP Laserjet 8550 Postscript printer. I worked alongside one colleague, and reported to the Creative Services Manager who was based at the Northampton ‘Chronicle & Echo’.I took briefs from the Sales staff, who informed me of what the customer is looking for, which may have been anything from a small 17cm by 4 column advert right up to a full 34cm by 9 column page, black and white or full colour. My work often included features made up of many full pages, which by its nature requires a good copy editing ability, and accurate eye for correct punctuation and correct spelling. I was also running the Graphics Department for a period of three months as a result of my colleague having had an unexpected family problem. I liaised daily with Sales staff, Managers from various departments, and customers.

Nov 2004 - Apr 2007

Graphic Designer/Mac Operator

Davies Fleming Associates

From 9th September 2002 to 19th November 2004 I had been employed as Graphic Designer and Mac Operator producing catalogues and graphics for stationery items for the ‘Club’ group of stationers. DFA is a design agency with the majority of regular work being in-house for the ‘Club’ group of stationers including ‘Magson’ and ‘Lewison’. Perks of the job included working alongside a Heidelberg Direct Imaging Press with PC RIP, and also an ‘Indigo’ printing press. Other responsibilities included the taking and processing of digital images generated in the photographic studio, and colour correction using Photoshop, enabling the image to look its best. I also maintained the large archive of artwork generated by the studio. I frequently worked in the photographic studio alongside a freelance photographer, with photographic equipment including a medium-format camera with ‘Leaf’ CCD Digital Converter and a Digital Nikon D1X SLR. I used Apple Mac G3s and G4s, and the latest versions of Mac OS X, Adobe Photoshop 7, Macromedia Freehand 10, Adobe Illustrator 9, Adobe Acrobat & Distiller 5, QuarkXPress 4 & 5, with some experience of Flightcheck v3.84.

Sep 2002 - Nov 2004

Desktop Publisher/Graphic Designer

From May 2000 to August 2002 I had been working as a DesktopPublisher/Graphic Designer for the Organisation for Chartered Physiotherapists in Private Practice. This involved designing documents and other material on the PC platform with ‘Windows 98’, using software such as MS Access, MS Word ‘97, Photoshop 5.5, Pagemaker 6.5, and Coreldraw 8. I produced various items of stationery, an annual 250-page directory and a quarterly journal, amongst other supporting materials. Other responsibilities included the upkeep of the Organisation’s PC network, and some admin. My computing/technical knowledge proved invaluable at this organisation, where IT knowledge was limited. The position involved liaison with persons throughout the country including the OCPPP Chairman, journal Editor, advertisers, members and related organisations such as the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists.
