    Duties varied and time consuming, involving all aspects of a large and complex department and its operations (more than 10 full-time faculty members, approximately 200 majors – one of largest on campus, graduate program and undergraduate major, minor, and at the time associates degree, the department also maintains a laboratory that supports introductory level classes in particular as well as research projects by students and faculty – the chair oversees the lab supervisor who runs the lab and the large number of students lab assistants); Program management, assessment, self-study and outside review as scheduled, course scheduling each semester and 5-year plan of courses; faculty issues – full- and part-time - including hiring, evaluation, etc.; member of council of chairs; budget oversight and management; produce a department newsletter each semester highlighting faculty and student accomplishments and issues (developed also an online “scrapbook” of major information and other issues important to students as well as faculty activities and accomplishments, also produced a number of other online department archives of information); advising of students, particularly when other faculty unavailable or for special issues and transfer students; maintained department webpages. Taught two classes per semester in addition to chair responsibilities (in Fall 2005 served as both department chair and CLAS Associate Dean – taught no classes that semester). Served also as Acting Chair for Spring and Summer semesters in 1993.

Served as director for first 3 years of the program, establishing program processes and policies, overseeing course offerings/scheduling, thesis processes, student inquiries, recruitment, admissions issues, serving on the campus graduate council, directed 1st thesis of the program. Ultimately, struggles to maintain sufficient students in the program (a track in clinical psych that had been planned as a primary focus of the program was not permitted and the applied psych focus did not attract enough interest), led the department in Fall 2005 while I was chair to discontinue and eliminate the program. Last graduate received the MA in December 2006.
