About John Middendorf
I am currently the Director of Engineering at Open Additive, LLC (OA). We have a top notch team and are looking to change the AM industry by providing robust, reliable equipment with innovative new technology. I completed a PhD in THz photoconductive systems in 2014 and moved into the additive manufacturing (AM) field immediately after, where I lead the companies effort to identify key sensor technologies for in situ monitoring - aimed at quality assurance and eventually closed-loop feedback control. In order to complete this research my team had to build AM machines from scratch, given the limitations and closed nature of other machine OEMs on the market. Consequently, my team and I have learned about AM the right way, by doing everything possible ourselves, and understand the challenges facing the industry. I am currently leading a world-class team designing and building Open Additives LPBF machines, which naturally come with industry leading in situ sensing, industry standard quality, and unique capability such as subtractive laser machining in our Selective Laser Ablation & Melting (SLAM) process.
Listed skills include Project Management, Research, Public Speaking, Matlab, and 10 others.

Director
Director Of Engineering | Technical Fellow
The director of Engineering at Open Additive - building the most flexible and powerful laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) machines. Leading design and engineering activities and integrating novel, cutting edge technology into state-of-the-art LPBF machines. The engineering team at Open Additive is expected to build robust, quality machines capable of meeting industry standards, while pushing the industry forward using innovative technology.
Chief Scientist
I'm technical lead of the 3D innovation lab (3DI) at UTC. Our small but diverse and skilled team has over a dozen funded projects that aim to qualify metal AM processes and develop new advanced AM processes such as graded alloy printing and hybrid manufacturing. We are industry leading AM researchers that have successfully commercialized fully open-architecture laser powder bed fusion systems and in situ monitoring sensors to qualify builds quickly and automatically. I personally manage the technical direction of the group and write most of the technical proposal sections, as well as get my hands dirty in the lab whenever I can. Check out our unique and industry leading work at www.utc3di.com !
Principal Scientist
Technical lead for metal additive manufacturing research at Universal Technology Corporation. Research areas include sensor development, process development, advanced alloy development, and others. I'm the principal investigator on many of these projects and lead the overall research direction of the technical group. I also play a significant role in the development of SLM equipment and sensors that UTC sells - we are a rare American manufacturer of AM machines, send me a message for more details.
Additive Manufacturing Research Scientist
After the acquisition of Mound Laser by Resonetics (a non-small business entity) the SBIR/STTR projects I run were transferred to Advratech. My job functions are mostly identical, so check out the Mound Laser description below.
Additive Manufacturing Research Scientist
After finishing my PhD I joined Mound Laser where I won several Additive Manufacturing research projects (mostly SBIR) and served in the PI capacity. All of these projects are focused on developing new sensor technology for additive manufacturing process control, including high speed imagery, spectroscopy, and profilometry. The primary additive technology used in my research has been selective laser melting, but we have given consideration to others. Some of the projects and highlights include: • PI on Phase I NASA STTR - In-Process Monitoring of Additive Manufacturing During this project several optical sensors were investigated for AM process control with positive results. • PI on Phase II NASA STTR - In-Process Monitoring of Additive Manufacturing We were able to successfully lead this project into Phase II, where it is currently underway. • PI on Phase I NASA STTR - Geometric Analysis of Additive Manufacturing This program aims to develop novel surface profilometry techniques for AM process control and feedback. Phase I is ongoing. • PI on Air Force SBIR subcontract to Luna Innovations for additive manufacturing research.I also spent significant time at Mound assisting an Air Force SBIR project to develop novel AM methods for build parts with 99.9% copper, developing NDE techniques for automotive gear measurement, and continuing to modify and improve designs for R&D SLM testbeds (which we use for our research projects). These projects have been transferred to Advratech, where I continue to execute them as PI.
