John has 22 years of experience engaging and working with communities across the country on urban design projects and Form-Based Codes. Through the public design charrette process, John effectively facilitates conversations and actively expands the reach of the public engagement process. Through his collaborative spirit and dynamic style, John has created a host of award-winning projects that engage the latest in technology and help communities understand, support, and articulate character of place. John is a regarded expert on the topic of Missing Middle Housing—a term coined to describe the range of housing types that are compatible in scale with single-family homes and addresses the growing demand for walkable, urban living. Over the last few years, John has collaborated with AARP to present on this topic at a national scale. He continues to actively incorporate Missing Middle Housing types into his projects and zoning codes. John and his family first learned about and experienced Missing Middle Housing as a young family when they purchased their first home, a small 2.5-story duplex in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.When not working with project teams as the Studio Manager at Opticos Design or speaking to audiences about Missing Middle Housing, John can be found out documenting natural and urban landscapes with his mirrorless camera.
