John joined the Air Force as an engineering cadet 1974 and completed his degree in Aeronautical Engineering through Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) while posted to the Diploma Cadet Squadron in Melbourne. He won the prestigious J. N. McNicoll prize awarded by RMIT each year to the graduate demonstrating outstanding academic achievement and leadership potential.Commissioned as an Engineering Officer in December 1977, John began a long association with the F111 as maintenance officer, systems engineer, a posting to the United States for engineering liaison and project management duties, and finally as Senior Engineering Officer of No. 1 Squadron at Amberley.In 1989 he was posted to the Aircraft Research and Development Unit at RAAF Base Edinburgh where he was promoted to take command of the Engineering Squadron. A move to Canberra in 1992 saw him complete several staff appointments in Air Force Office, Joint Services Staff College and a year as a liaison officer with the International Division of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.In 1997 John was posted to Melbourne as the Director of Technical Airworthiness, responsible for the regulation of engineering for ADF aircraft. He completed the Defence Strategic Studies Course in 1999 before returning to Support Command Australia, Air Force Component as Director of the aviation logistics support programme. In 2000 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for services to aircraft engineering in the Australian Defence Force.He was promoted to Air Commodore and joined the Defence Material Organisation as Director General Air Lift, Maritime, and Training Systems within Aerospace Systems Division in 2001. He was then promoted to Air Vice-Marshal and Head of the Aerospace Systems Division before taking up the post of Chief Information Officer for Defence in December 2004.
