About John Needs
I've been working at Oldland Aerospace/Dynamatic Oldland Aerospace Ltd. for 24 years. 2000, CNC Milling Machinist/Programmer. I progressed on the shop floor where I was heavily involved with new projects and tooling as well as daily production work. 2004, I was promoted to Team Leader. This involved start up of our new 5-Axis Machining Facility along with our Business and Engineering dept. and a team of skilled machinists. Between us we developed the facility quickly and as a company we became leaders in 5-Axis machining capability across the South West. My colleagues and I worked on many Airbus, GKN and Agusta Westland contracts and produce quality components. I'd developed a close working relationship with my team members to establish a very successful production environment that produce parts efficiently and effectively. My day to day duties included overseeing team members, machine maintainence and repair, raw materials to machine, liasing with the Production Department and finish boring of A320/A321 Carriages (Flap Track Beam Assy) along with component inspection. I was also responsible for all our 4-Axis and 5-Axis machine geometry alignment and kinematic setting. 2013, I was promoted to Technical Team Leader. I had built relationships with our machine suppliers and Service Engineers across the UK and Europe to help me with sourcing, repairing and delivery of spares for our machinery. 2013 also took me across to the Handtmann facility in Germany to receive the Handtmann HBZ Compact Cell Twin Pallet 4x1 with Siemens 840D control. 2015, after a challenging 18 months between Handtmann and the new Mazak 5-Axis machining centre, I'm working within our Engineering Dept. We have implemented extensive machining improvements to the already successful A320/A321 Flap Track Beam Assy. Carriages.Mid 2015 brings a fresh new journey as Technical Lead, working from our Swindon facility as part of the new Technical Engineering Team. The year 2020 has marked 20 years service. It’s certainly been interesting along the way. The last 18 months have been quite challenging in some ways, especially moving between both sites of Bristol and Swindon carrying out continuous improvements, problem solving and further new contracts which are increasingly challenging as technical demands and strategies increase. These things are what makes Engineering fascinating. It’s forever evolving!
