A fellow Grad student and I compared different spatial normalization methods on the effectiveness of automatic classification of 3D Brain MRI data. For effective classification of Brain MRI data the images need to be normalized, to minimize natural abnormalities found between the brains. In order to accomplish this, all the data must be registered to a template. We compared different types of image registration, or spatial normalization. In a general sense, the registration methods could be sorted on a spectrum of least aggressive to most aggressive, with the most aggressive making micro adjustments to the data. First, we built a 3D Convolutional Network (CNN) to classify pre-labeled MRI data. The data structure was then preprocessed, and set up for the various registration methods. Once the various registration methods were applied to the data, all sets were run through the CNN, and the results were compared. To run everything associated with the project we were given access to the UBC ARC Sockeye supercomputing system. We used both Linux and Python. Within python we used the Advanced Normalization Tools (ANTs) package for registration and the Keras API for the construction of the CNN.

I took part in the Engineers in Scrubs program at UBC. This program takes a group of students through the Biodesign process. As a group we are presented with current problems in the biomedical engineering world, and choose one to attempt to solve. A group of 3, including myself, chose the challenge of designing a Surgical Suction device for hospitals and other relevant institutions in Low Resource settings. There are a number of issues associated with this problem, but we chose to focus on the power issue. A lack of access to electricity, or severely unreliable electricity limits the use of surgical suction devices in these areas and so we designed a suction device that would be power independent. We went through the Biodesign process, including the construction of two basic prototypes. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we were unable to access the facilities necessary to complete our design, and this is where we finished the project.

After completing my undergrad I took some time to pay off my loans as a Wildfire Fighter. I was a member of an Initial Attack Crew in the Cariboo Region. Here I acted as part of a team in fire suppression activities, including proactive and reactive approaches. In this environment teamwork was essential for both success and the safety of the team. Clear and effective communication, planning, time management, and a good grasp of the bigger picture were all crucial. In my last year I was promoted to a Crew Leader position. Here I was given control of the team as well as any relevant resources that were necessary. This included additional personnel, heavy equipment, helicopters and other aircraft. The 2017 and 2018 fires seasons were respectively the worst fire seasons to date. As a Wildfire Fighter I improved my communication and planning skills. I learned to take all of the information available to me, quickly analyze the situation, and make decisions to maximize the benefit to me and those around me.
