CRISA was launched to mainly complement and complete the system of Governance in South Africa by putting in place a code that guides institutional investors. CRISA aims to provide the investor community with the guidance needed to give effect to the King Report on Corporate Governance South Africa (King III) as well as the United Nations-backed Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) initiative. Both require institutional investors to take ESG issues seriously. For more information on CRISA visit: http://www.iodsa.co.za/?page=crisa

  • Government Employees Pension Fund
    Head Investments And Actuarial
Government Employees Pension Fund Jun 2008 - Sep 2013
The Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) is arguably one of the largest pension funds in the word in terms of members (1.2m), pensioners (360k) and assets (R1.258 trillion ~ US$120 billion as at end of 2013) under management. At the core/heart of any pension fund is its assets and actuarial liabilities, which at all times must be managed well to ensure that the fund stays in a healthy financial position. My key responsibility therefore is to ensure that the liabilities of the fund remain adequately funded into perpetuity. The fund is a Defined Benefit Scheme, which means the investment risk has to be borne by the sponsor and not the members. Therefore to ensure that the fund remains adequately funded implies that one has to develop an investment strategy that is cognisant of the liability structure of the fund.
