John Olive began his academic career as a primary school teacher in England in 1967 after obtaining an honors degree in Mathematics from Manchester University and a Post Graduate Certificate in Primary Education from Leicester University. John was recruited by the Educational Development Center’s Follow Through Project in 1969 to be EDC’s advisor for Mathematics and Drama. In this role he helped establish the District 6 Advisory Center in Germantown, PA. John returned to England in 1972 where he worked as an advisor to small village schools in Leicestershire until he emigrated to the USA in 1975. John taught 2nd and 3rd grade at the Paidea School in Atlanta, GA for two years. He also worked for the Metropolitan Cooperative Educational Service Agency (Metro CESA) for three years, eventually acting as director of the Special Education Competencies for Teachers (SECT) project at Metro CESA. John obtained his Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Emory University, under the direction of Professor Dora Helen Skypek in 1985. He was director of the Atlanta-Emory Logo Project from 1985-1988 and became an assistant professor of mathematics education at The University of Georgia in the fall of 1986. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1992 and Full Professor in 2001. John’s research over the past 30 years has focused on students’ mathematical thinking and the development and use of technological tools to support that thinking. He has published over 30 papers, articles, monographs, book chapters and is co-author (with Dr. Leslie P. Steffe) of Children’s Fractional Knowledge, the culmination of 20 years of research with Dr. Steffe into children’s constructions of fractions.John was a member of the organizing board for the ICMI Study 17 on Technology and was lead author on the chapter on learning in the study volume Technology Revisited: Rethinking the Terrain.John retired July 1, 2012 and was awarded Emeritus Professor status.
