John is a life sciences industry veteran, lawyer, lecturer, writer and former diplomat. He has been a member of corporate, government and non-profit boards, and advised private equity and venture capital firms on healthcare sector transactions and portfolio company matters.During his time in industry, John was responsible for a wide range of legal and corporate affairs functions, including M&A and other transactions, corporate governance, intellectual property, government affairs & public policy, corporate communications, investor relations, risk management, internal audit, compliance and quality assurance. He has served on corporate boards of specialty pharmaceutical, biomedical device and healthcare IT companies.John was nominated by George W. Bush and confirmed by the Senate in 2008 as a member of the bipartisan U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy. He worked on the presidential campaigns of George H.W. Bush, and served from 1989 to 1992 with the U.S. Department of State under Secretary James A. Baker III. Early in his career, he worked on Capitol Hill and clerked for Judge Albert V. Bryan Sr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. John is an affiliate professor of law at the University of Washington, Seattle, lectures at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and has held visiting research appointments at UCLA, Princeton and Oxford. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the American Law Institute and the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation, and formerly was a member of the board of governors of the East-West Center in Honolulu, a visiting scholar in East European Studies with the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and an Eisenhower Fellow to Northern Ireland. John has published essays, comments and opinion pieces in Foreign Affairs, Yale Journal of Health Policy Law & Ethics, Georgetown Journal of Int’l Affairs, American Journal of Int’l Law, National Law Journal, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor, and online in Health Affairs Forefront, Forbes and STAT.
