John Packard spent 31 years of active steel sales and marketing in the flat rolled steel industry: service center sales & management 1977-1997; Winner Steel (Sharon Coatings) agent 1997-2008; Agent for trading companies 2004-2008.He founded a steel industry newsletter and website Steel Market Update in August 2008 to assist those in the flat rolled and plate steel industries in North America. He started the SMU Steel Summit Conference in October 2010 and it has grown to be the largest flat rolled and plate steel conference in North America. John also started Steel 101: Introduction to Steel Making & Market Fundamentals as well as Hedging Steel workshops which have trained well over 1,000 young executives within the industry.He sold Steel Market Update to the CRU Group out of London, England in May 2017. Worked as President & CEO of Steel Market Update until October 1, 2021. John retired from SMU/CRU at the end of August 2022.Currently John is President & CEO of Packard Consulting Services, Inc.John sits on the Board of Directors of Reibus International and the Board of Trustees for Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota.Specialties: Analysis of the flat rolled steel markets - Pricing, Trends, News, Insights. John also works with the second largest steel conference which is the Tampa Steel Conference which is held in Tampa, Florida in February.John is currently working on a book about changes in the way steel is bought and sold within the steel industry.
