About John Paige

Starting in Fall 2015, I will be in a PhD program in statistics. My goal is to use whatever I learn whilc working towards a PhD to help improve uncertainty quantification in climate models and to develop efficient, parallel computing tools for spatial models. I have many other areas of interest in statistics, however, including methods in: MCMC, graphical modeling, statistical emulation, optimization, and high-dimensional inference problems.

I built a program to reformat netCDF climate simulation files to a file readable by MODTRAN, and now I am performing principal component analysis on the MODTRAN spectral data. We plan to submit a paper to a peer-reviewed journal this spring.

We apply models we create to aphid group movement data that we collect and analyze using video processing software and MATLAB. The goal of this research is to try and find the best model we can for aphid group movement and behavior.

    Modeled aphid swarm behavior with Professor Chad Topaz of Macalester College. Wrote code in MATLAB, R, and Mathematica to analyze aphid positional data collected using utrack: tracking software for MATLAB. Created probabilistic model governing aphid behavior using nonlinear model fits on the observations, and compared interacting and non-interacting models using non-parametric methods. Published results in PLoS ONE, and I am one of three primary authors out of eight authors in total. The paper is available at: http://arxiv.org/abs/1308.4917

    Worked on accelerating the 'fields' spatial statistics package in R with Doctors Doug Nychka and Srinath Vadlamani. Used Rmpi (which uses Message Passing Interface) to parallelize likelihood calculations across multiple cores and GPUs on the Yellowstone supercomputer.
