Over the last 20 years, SS Great Britain has become established as one of Bristol’s leading visitor attractions and an icon for the entrepreneurial history of the city.Within the stories and collections of the ship there are opportunities to make links with people from a greater variety of backgrounds and cultures so the SS Great Britain can be part of a more inclusive history and identity.Museums are also places for leisure, spending time with friends and familyfor general wellbeing and sense of belonging. Not everyone has an interest in museums, but by getting to know those who don’t, inviting them to be part of what we do and sharing or handing over creative control and decision making we can evolve the culture and environment of a museum to be more inclusive.My job is to make connections with community groups and individuals across Bristol and work with other teams in the trust to make progress in these areas!

In this role I brought together a cross-organisational team, including creative development, operations and marketing to produce exciting seasons of public programming for family, adult and community audiences. This was a newly created role, merging different areas of public programming together to give a single oversight for creative coherence.I worked with a variety of external partners to develop and/or deliver programmes - community groups, researchers and artistic and commercial partners.I took redundancy during the pandemic.

In this role I managed a team of five creative developers, and together we brought a programme of activities and events to an audience of around 200,000 people a year - including under5s, families with primary and secondary age children, adults and community groups of interest, need and geography.I worked with a wide variety of external partners in different types of relationship, from paid contract through to co-design:-Academics with whom to develop rich and innovative ways of engaging an audience with their area of research, and where appropriate support research as well as public engagement outcomes.-Community leaders with whom to get to know audiences We The Curious may not previously have engaged, and explore benefits that could be derived through working together - creating joyful spaces for more people, supporting parents with child-led play and learning, improving health and wellbeing - evolving cultural venues to be the most relevant, exciting and useful for their communities.-Artistic partners with whom to devise ambitious ways of combining scientific ideas and creative approaches.-Commercial partners with a shared interest with whom to bring cutting edge technology, skills or creative endeavour to visitors.-All sorts of combinations of the above!

In this role I creatively developed and project managed strands of programming including Toddler Takeovers (daytime, whole-venue events for under 5s), After Hours (evening, whole-venue events for adults) and sleepovers for Cubs and Brownies. I also ran We The Curious' Studio theatre space, developing presenter-led, interactive shows.

I created face-to-face, hands-on activities and events to engage family and school audiences with science, and trained and supported a facilitation team to deliver these.
