Wilfried van Sark (Utrecht)This internship involved investigating whether p-type a-SiOx:H could be used as a hole transport layer (HTL) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). p-type a-SiOx:H layers were fabricated and characterised and later full solar cells fabricated and characterised. Different architectures and processes were tested. The results from this internship suggest that it is not possible to use p-type a-SiOx:H as a HTL in PSCs due to there being a large barrier to the extraction of the holes, leading to very low short-circuit currents, fill-factors and efficiencies.Fabrication: PECVD, RF Magnetron Sputtering, Spin-Coating, Thermal Evaporation.Characterisation: Hall probe, Kelvin probe, 4-point probe, surface profiling, reflectance/transmission, contact angle measurements, AFM, IV-curves.Other: Cleanroom (category 10,000) experience

Joep PetersThe project focused on the possibility of utilising cation exchange (CE) - a powerful emerging technique to post-synthetically modify the composition of a material - to convert honeycomb superlattices of PbSe formed through the oriented attachment of quantum dots into HgSe. Ultimately, it was not possible to perform CE on the superlattices due to them washing away from the solid support during the reaction. The focus was then shifted to performing CE on the individual QDs. PbSe QDs were completely converted to CdSe and then the CdSe QDs were mostly converted to HgSe.Synthesis: Quantum Dot synthesis, cation exchange, N2 glovebox.Primary characterisation: UV-Vis, TEM, ICP-OES.Secondary characterisation: EDX, AFM, FT-IR.
