I am a Registered Nurse with a clinical background in community-based palliative care. My PhD examined the approaches taken by palliative care services to engage with, and build the capacity of, local communities to address end of life issues. I have specific interests in the sociology of health, illness, dying, death, caregiving and grief; community development; partnering methodology; and qualitative research methods. I am the immediate past-President of Public Health Palliative Care International http://www.phpci.org/I have an interest in promoting aged care as a career choice for undergraduate nursing students. In addition to my substantive position at the University of the Sunshine Coast, I work with the Caring at the End of Life research group led by Prof. Debbie Horsfall, Prof. Rosemary Leonard, Dr Kerrie Noonan and others in the School of Social Sciences and Psychology. We've previously worked together on "Caring at the end of life: co-creating an ecology of care" and the current project, "Developing an Index to Measure Death Literacy in Australia" with WSU, QUT and La Trobe University. We're colleagues in Public Health Palliative Care International and collaborating on the preparation and delivery of the 6th PHPC International Conference in October 2019 in the Blue Mountains outside Sydney.
