I have a varied career across a number of industries including farm management and food production, steel fabrication and erection, the construction industry and electrical-mechanical installation and servicing.I started my H&S career more by accident, whilst sharing a room with a friend on a stag party weekend. We got talking and then an interview... and as they say the rest is history.I have been fortunate that all my past experiences have led to being able to relate to everyone I meet on sites. I started in October 2008, just after the Construction Design & Management Regulations (CDM) changed, and became a CDM Coordinator. I started a 12 year journey, on the St Modwen, former BP Oil Refinery in Llandarcy, where the remaining buildings and structures were being demolished. Then a long period of ground remediation, and cleaning of the reservoirs took place. hawk Contracts were involved with the extensive ground works, with large areas to cut and fill, ready for the development. The infrastructure started to be installed with new roads, including alterations to junction 43 on the M4 motorway. The removal of the redundant pipe lines down to Queens Dock, the transfer site and Baglan Bay. The Demonstration Village, which was part of the Princes Trust was constructed in time for Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales to visit. A lot of design work went into the new access road off Fabian Way to the south of the site, with the demolition of redundant pipe bridges over the canal and railway line. There was a lot of rock stabilizing works on the terraces, where he first 300 houses were being built by Persimmon. The final scheme i worked on on this site was the new staircase which connected the phase 1 housing to the proposed phase 2 plot. I was able to pick up many skills from demolition, reclamation, remediation, working on reservoirs, civil works, construction of new homes, schools and warehouses.
