About John Scarpa

I have been involved in aquaculture research, teaching, and training for approximately 30 years. My areas of study include bivalve ploidy manipulation, delineating culture requirements of pharmacologically important species, determining effects of nutrition on immune function of fish, and shrimp physiology as related to culture. My educational endeavors include teaching undergraduate and graduate college courses, creating aquaculture laboratory exercises, and mentoring summer interns, graduate students and postdoctoral scientists.I am a native of Long Island, NY, where I earned my A.S. and B.S. degrees. I received my M.S. in Marine Studies from University of Delaware studying ploidy and genome manipulation in bivalves. I switched to vertebrates and received my Ph.D. in Wildlife & Fisheries Sciences from Texas A&M University studying the effects of mineral nutrition on fish immunocompetence. My postdoctoral positions brought me back to bivalves. While an NSF-STA Fellow in Japan, I was the first to document the viability of tetraploid bivalves; that is a bivalve with four genomes instead of the usual two. I was an Adjunct Instructor at Indian River State College, Research Professor in the Aquaculture and Stock Enhancement Program of Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at Florida Atlantic University, and Associate Professor of Aquaculture at TAMU-CC. Currently, I am the IAUC & IBC Coordinator in the Division of Research and Innovation at TAMU-CC.Specialties: Aquaculture, shellfish, crustacea, fish, microalgae.

Listed skills include Aquaculture, Science, Fish, Research, and 46 others.
