Manages a 4 person Office of the General Counsel, provides day-to-day legal counsel and risk management advice for the university, and formulates legal solutions to campus issues. Renders advice and legal opinions on student, employment, transactional and real estate issues and manages any resulting litigation or responses to charges on compliance issues. Provides advice on and oversees the review of policies, procedures, contracts, grants and license agreements for compliance to applicable federal and state laws and regulations and university policies. Also, provides input and guidance pertaining to athletics-related issues, laws and restrictions. Examples of issues addressed by my office and me include but may not be limited to grants and contracts, federal and state regulations, academic freedom and tenure, due process and First Amendment matters, campus security, NCAA rules, equal employment and personnel laws, nondiscrimination statutes, University and UNCW system policies, financial aid, OSHA compliance, Title IX compliance, open meetings laws, FERPA, intellectual property issues including university-stakeholder interactions (corporations, funding agencies, federal and state government, philanthropic organizations, etc.), and others. Works closely with UNC General Administration and the NC Attorney General's Office on litigation involving the university in federal and state courts and in administrative agencies such as the NC Office of Administrative Hearings.

Advised university on a range of legal issues, including employment law, student affairs, faculty conduct and performance, compliance, litigation support/analysis, and risk management.

Defended UNC system in a variety of litigation in state and federal courts, including civil rights laws, employment law, constitutional law (due process, first amendment, fourth amendment), etc.

Defended Dept of Correction in litigation, including civil rights claims, employment law, and constitutional law (due process, first amendment-speech and religious claims, and 8th amendment).

Labor and employment law counsel and litigator.

Trial counsel, Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, legal assistance attorney, claims judge advocate, and labor counselor in succession. Also served as military magistrate.
